Architecture & Federating Policies Working Group

This working group provides architecture and technical policy review for enrolled EOSC Nodes, ensuring that there is an agreed set of mandatory and recommended technical specifications and policies adopted by the Nodes to support change management and continuous improvement.

The working group will play a role in standardising architectural representation to support the Federation and will propose or endorse a Federation architecture.

Scope

For federating (technical) policies, the WG will

  • Review recommendations for new & existing technical policies & guidelines proposed by EEN, EOSC-A Task Forces, and EOSC HE projects
  • With the Operations Committee, assess whether they can be adopted and implemented by all, most or a subset of the EOSC Nodes
  • With the Node Coordinators Committee, make decisions on whether to adopt as mandatory, recommended or optional
  • Not write or propose new policies & guidelines itself

For architecture, the WG will

  • Collate existing Node & Federation Service Architecture documentation, focusing on Federating capabilities.
  • Propose and promote standardisation and technical interoperability of architectural representation & language
  • Work towards an agreed Federation Architecture, using the outputs of EOSC Projects and EOSC-A Task Forces as the primary source.

Objectives

Q1 2026

  • Prioritise the technical policies and guidelines identified by the Handbook subgroup
  • Collect architectural specifications of as-is Node & Service architectures
  • Propose an adoption and change management decision procedure

Q2 2026

  • Present a priority list of technical policies for adoption/recommendation
  • Build a registry (managed index) of as-is Architecture
  • Recommend architectural representation best practice

Q3 2026

  • Operationalise the review and change management of technical policies & guidelines
  • Integrate Architecture review with FitSM
  • Deliver a first version of the Federation Architecture

Rolling updates from the working group

25 June 2026

A proposed Federation policy-review process was presented by the Architecture and Federating Policies Working Group at the NCC#6 meeting on 25 June 2026. The process would include policy prioritisation, high-level review, operational impact assessment and final adoption by the NCC.

Further discussion is required on whether policies developed by specialist Working Groups should pass through a central review process or be assessed independently using a common methodology. This issue will be addressed at the upcoming meeting in Brussels.
