Course 2: Applying the EOSC Federation Handbook

EOSC Academy Logo

The EOSC Federation Handbook is a practical guide for facility managers, resource providers, and technical staff implementing the EOSC Federation. This course will explain how to apply the Federation Handbook with the help of real-world Node implementations. It will provide guidance on how to build Nodes and join the Federation. The course targets organizations preparing, or are in the start-up phase, to build Nodes and EOSC community members seeking deeper understanding of Federation processes.

Course summary

The EOSC Federation Handbook serves as the reference document for implementing the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation. It is intended as a practical guide for stakeholders – specifically facility managers, resource providers, and technical staff – involved in establishing and operating the EOSC Federation Nodes during the build-up of the EOSC Federation (2025-2027).

Specific goals of the course:

  • Explain what readers of the Handbook can expect to learn from the Handbook.
  • Clarify what can and cannot be found in the Handbook.
  • Present how the Handbook requirements were applied by specific Nodes.
  • Learn how to Apply the building a Node and join the Federation.
  • Convey the idea of the Handbook as a community effort (led and carried out by the community), that it is in continuous evolution, and that feedback is welcome and desired (stressing the channels to do that would be good).

The course targets the beneficiaries of the Gravity Preparatory and Interproject Calls who are preparing to build a Node as well as organisations and experts within the EOSC community who wish to deepen their understanding of the Federation and the processes supporting its development.

To ensure the course is as interactive as possible the strategy is to use a “flipped classroom” approach. The goal is to encourage the audience to engage with the EOSC Federation Handbook (aka Handbook) before the session, so the online sessions can focus on high-level explanation and answering their specific questions.

Previous knowledge of the EOSC Federation Handbook is strongly recommended

By the end of this course, the learner will:

  • Have detailed knowledge of the Handbook:
  • Understand the significance of the Handbook;
  • Be able to reflect on how to apply it to their own needs;
  • Be able to formulate and answer questions on the process of becoming a node.

Modules of this course

Module 1: Introduction to the EOSC Federation Handbook

access_alarm

20 Minutes

This module will introduce the students to the EOSC Federation Handbook. It will explain why, how and for who the Handbook was written. It will introduce the different types of EOSC Nodes and provide some specific examples of Nodes. The module will end with a short exercise for the students to identify their own Node.

Module 2: Expected Outcomes of the EOSC Federation

access_alarm

20 Minutes

This module will introduce the students to the expected outcomes of the EOSC Federation, explaining the expected impact and challenges of each of them. It will explain the outcomes expected from a specific Node as example. The module will end with a short exercise for the students on identifying the outcomes for their own Node. What we learnt from the video and the handbook?

Module 3: Governance of the EOSC Federation

access_alarm

20 Minutes

This module will describe the current governance of the EOSC Federation, both strategic and operational, and how this is carried out in practice. It will explore the governance of a Node with the help of an example. The module will end with and exercise for the students on the governance of their own Node. What we learnt about the topic?

Module 4: Architecture of the EOSC Federation

access_alarm

30 Minutes

This module will describe the architecture of the EOSC Federation and the Nodes in sufficient detail for new nodes to design their own. It will explain the Federating Capabilities and give examples how to implement them. It will present the archetype Node architecture and the terminology used to describe the different aspects. A specific example of how this is implemented in a Node will be presented. The module will end with an exercise for the students on designing their own Node architecture.

Module 5: Research Resources for the EOSC Federation

access_alarm

30 Minutes

This module will introduce the different types of research resources and how to expose them in the Federation. It will give examples of research resources for different Nodes. The module will end with an exercise for the students on identifying the research resources for their Node. What we learnt about the topic? What we learnt from the video and the Handbook?

Module 6: Applying to become a Node + On-boarding services

access_alarm

30 Minutes

This module will present the process of applying to become a Node, what the requirements are and how to fulfil them. An example of a Node which has done so will be presented. The module will end with an exercise for the students on preparing an application for their Node to join the Federation. What we learnt about the topic?
