This course introduces all relevant aspects of EOSC policies, both for the enrolment of nodes and the onboarding of resources and services. It presents the overall context and the minimum policies required by the EOSC Federation, focusing on the Resources and Services Onboarding Policy, and the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and the User Access Policy (UAP). It provides concrete examples of existing policies for onboarding of services and other resources among the different types of Nodes available to date: e-infrastructure nodes, national nodes, thematic nodes. It also introduces the Node Registration Policy describing the minimum steps a Node can implement.

Course summary

This course provides a practical introduction to the policies and processes supporting the onboarding of resources and services and the enrolment of autonomous Nodes into the EOSC Federation. Drawing on the work and guidelines of the EOSC EU Node, it explains the minimum policy requirements and how they can inform the development or adaptation of policies within different Node contexts.

Participants will explore the policies and workflows for onboarding resources and services and registering autonomous Nodes within the EOSC Federation. The training covers the EOSC EU Node’s Resources and Services Onboarding Policy, Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), and User Access Policy (UAP), helping learners draft new policies and align legacy ones with the current Federation context. Through practical examples from e-infrastructure, national, and thematic Nodes, participants will examine provider engagement, onboarding workflows, approval procedures, roles and responsibilities, and lessons learnt. The course also introduces Node registration processes and technical integration requirements, including the EOSC Interoperability Framework (EOSC IF) and AARC Blueprint-compliant AAI proxies, supporting learners in adapting policies and workflows to their own Node operations.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to:

  • Draft or adapt onboarding policies, including legacy policies, in line with EOSC EU Node requirements
  • Define onboarding workflows, approval procedures, and roles and responsibilities, drawing on practical examples and lessons learnt from established Nodes
  • Explain Node registration processes and associated technical integration requirements, including the EOSC Interoperability Framework (EOSC IF) and AARC Blueprint-compliant AAI proxies

The course supports learners in developing and adapting policies and workflows tailored to their own Node operations within the EOSC Federation.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and scope of the policies governing resource and service onboarding within the EOSC Federation;
  • Identify how new and legacy onboarding policies can be aligned with EOSC EU Node requirements;
  • Outline an onboarding workflow, including provider engagement, roles and responsibilities, and approval procedures;
  • Apply lessons from established Nodes to drafting or adapting their own onboarding policies;
  • Describe Node registration processes and associated technical integration requirements.

Modules of this course

Module 1: Understanding the policies for onboarding resources and services

access_alarm

40 Minutes

The first module sets the overall context for the development of onboarding policies, based on the work and guidelines delivered by the EOSC EU Node. It presents the EU Node’s requirements and the minimum policies guiding its offering, focusing on three main aspects: a) the EOSC EU Node Resources and Services Onboarding Policy, b) the EOSC EU Node Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), and c) the User Acceptance Policies. It supports drafting of onboarding policies, but it also helps in understanding how any legacy onboarding policies, developed before the EOSC Federation, comply with the current context and how they can be interpreted and aligned.

Module 2: Examples of existing policies for onboarding of resources and services

access_alarm

60 Minutes

This module provides an overview of the onboarding procedures, indicating how resource providers engage with thematic or national Nodes to align with federated governance. It presents concrete policies, covering both the perspective of the National and the Thematic Nodes, showcasing mature examples that describe the onboarding workflow, the approval procedures, and the roles and responsibilities within the Node, concluding with lessons learnt and practical advice.

Module 3: Node registration policies, processes and workflows

60 Minutes

This module outlines the enrolment elements of autonomous Nodes joining the EOSC Federation. Participants will explore the different steps involving technical integration requirements, including compliance with the EOSC Interoperability Framework (EOSC IF) and the use of Authentication and Authorisation for Research and Collaboration Blueprint-compliant AAI proxies.
