EOSC Node | Sweden - EOSC Association

The EOSC Node Sweden’s participation in the EOSC Federation will enable the federation of Swedish research data, infrastructures and services into a high-quality, trusted, interoperable system that is easy for researchers to access and use.

The Swedish research system is diverse and organised around several self-governing organisations, including higher education institutions and research-performing government agencies. The onboarding of the Swedish national EOSC Node launches a long-term federated evolution of Sweden’s FAIR-aligned data and services ecosystem, initially involving services from Sunet, SND and SciLifeLab, while establishing structures for future onboarding of high-quality Swedish service providers.

Through its national EOSC Node, Sweden’s long-term commitment to Open Science and FAIR and open access to research data will be further consolidated and made accessible to researchers and research collaborations.

Key objective: The key objective is to establish a stable national core EOSC Node as the base for long-term development of a federated and sustainable system providing access to Swedish data, tools and services. Technical onboarding as well as stakeholder engagement and establishing structures for long-term evolution of the Node is essential in the build-up phase.

Science areas: The Node is expected to be broadly applicable throughout all research areas, with an initial emphasis on life sciences and biomedicine. Physical sciences, social sciences, technology, arts and humanities, and interdisciplinary research are also in scope.

The EOSC Node Sweden will increasingly improve access to high-quality Swedish research data and services, supporting FAIR data reuse, international collaboration and advanced research workflows. This will help reduce the administrative barriers to conducting research both nationally and internationally, enabling researchers to focus more on core research activities rather than administrative layers.

Scientific use cases

Data- and workflow sharing for federated access and analysis

This use case integrates a service registry for discovering EOSC-relevant services and supports FAIR workflows for federated analysis, including interoperability with REANA (via the CERN EOSC node).

The use case enables federated access, sharing, and analysis of Swedish life science data through structured repositories with web and programmatic interfaces, alongside metadata for cross-node discovery. Researchers can deposit outputs through submission services to Zenodo and other domain-specific repositories, building on an existing TRL 9 repository with over 1,600 items.

Together, these services support open, interoperable research workflows for academia, SMEs, and research infrastructures, while excluding sensitive or clinical data.

SciLifeLab Serve: Open-Source software platform for sharing and serving data science software, applications, and AI models

This use case introduces SciLifeLab Serve as a federated EOSC service for sharing and executing AI models and data science applications, accessible via serve.scilifelab.se and supported by open-source deployment through GitHub.

Integrated with EOSC federated AAI and resource catalogues, the platform enables interoperable access while publishing models as FAIR, citable objects with DOIs via DataCite. Using Docker and Kubernetes, SciLifeLab Serve allows researchers across EOSC Nodes to deploy, share, and reuse applications without local infrastructure, complementing execution services such as REANA. This strengthens cross-node collaboration, reproducibility, and scalable access to machine learning tools within the federated ecosystem.

Federating capabilities

This use case integrates SUNET Drive with other Enterprise Sync & Share systems such as NextCloud, ownCloud, and OpenCloud to create a seamless data-sharing fabric across EOSC Nodes using the OpenCloudMesh (OCM) protocol.

Building on CS3mesh4EOSC and collaborations with CERN, SURF, CSC, and CESNET, it enables researchers to securely share data across institutions through intuitive interfaces without manual transfers. The service establishes interoperable, federated collaboration while relying on EOSC core services like identity registries and discoverability tools.

By deploying production-ready EFSS systems, it delivers scalable, user-driven data exchange within the EOSC Federation.
