Result description
LUMEN develops the user-facing environments through which researchers discover scientific resources and resource providers expose their data to the EOSC ecosystem. The core component is a white-label discovery platform, built as a generalisation of the GoTriple technology, that any community can deploy and customise as its own portal. Three instances are being deployed: for SSH (as an evolution of GoTriple), for Earth Systems, and for Molecular Dynamics. Each community adapts the interface and features to its domain-specific needs while sharing a common open-source base. For resource providers, the White-Label Platform includes a dashboard for monitoring metadata quality and FAIR compliance, as well as APIs for metadata enrichment, translation, and normalisation. These tools help providers improve the quality of what they expose to the federation without changing their internal systems. On top of these platforms, LUMEN provides a set of innovative cross-platform services that enhance the user experience across the federation. The Interdisciplinary Meta-Search Service enables cross-domain queries using semantic search. The LUMEN Chatbot AIDA provides conversational access to resources through natural language. The Metrics Service tracks usage, visibility, and open access status. Advanced visualisation tools support pattern-driven exploration of results. The Software Catalogue aggregates research software metadata from multiple communities. LUMIS, the LUMEN Infrastructure for Semantics, supports the collaborative creation and management of the semantic artefacts used to enrich metadata across platforms. All these services are modular and can be embedded in the White-Label portals or used independently through APIs. Together, they form the user and resource provider environments through which the LUMEN federation is accessed and operated in practice.
Problem addressed
Researchers currently lack integrated environments for discovering scientific resources across disciplines. Each community has built its own platform, with its own search interface and capabilities, and there is no shared user environment connecting them. For a researcher working on a cross-domain question, this means visiting multiple catalogues, learning multiple interfaces, and having no way to explore resources across fields in a single view. For resource providers, the situation is similar: there is no common tooling for monitoring metadata quality, assessing FAIR compliance, or enriching metadata before it is exposed to the wider ecosystem. Each provider manages this on its own, with varying levels of tooling and support. For smaller or emerging communities, the cost of developing a discovery platform from scratch is a real barrier. They often lack the resources, and existing solutions are either too generic or too tied to a single domain to be reused. LUMEN addresses this by providing a reusable white-label platform that any community can deploy at low cost, combined with cross-domain services (Meta-Search, chatbot, visualisation, metrics, software catalogue, LUMIS) that give researchers and providers a consistent, integrated experience across the federation.
