Travel advisory for Tuscany, 14 October

A regional general strike is scheduled in Tuscany on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the opening day of the EOSC Symposium in Florence.

The strike may affect travel to Florence and local transport connections. We strongly recommend that all participants travelling on 14 October review their travel arrangements and allow additional time to reach the Symposium venue.

Expected transport disruptions

Rail services – 09:01 to 17:00

A strike involving railway personnel in Tuscany is expected to affect regional trains and may also disrupt high-speed and long-distance services operated by Trenitalia and Italo.

Cancellations, delays and timetable changes are possible, including shortly before and after the official strike period.

Participants travelling by train from Rome, Bologna, Milan, Pisa or other cities should check their specific service directly with the operator before departure.

Local and regional buses – 08:20 to 12:20

Autolinee Toscane has announced a four-hour strike affecting urban and regional bus services across Tuscany, including Florence. Some services may be delayed or cancelled.

Air travel and Florence tram services

The aviation sector and Florence’s tram operator, GEST, are excluded from the announced strike.

Flights to Florence and Pisa are therefore not directly targeted by this industrial action, and Florence’s T2 tram line is expected to provide a useful connection between Florence Airport and the city centre. Nevertheless, passengers should check for operational updates.

Recommended travel alternatives

  • Arriving at Florence Airport (FLR): Take tram line T2 towards the city centre, alighting at Alamanni–Stazione for Santa Maria Novella railway station, or use a taxi. The tram journey takes approximately 20 minutes.
  • Arriving at Pisa Airport (PSA): Rail connections via Pisa Centrale may be disrupted. Consider a direct airport coach to Florence, subject to availability and confirmation of service, or arrange a private transfer or taxi in advance.
  • Arriving at Bologna Airport (BLQ): High-speed trains from Bologna Centrale to Florence may be affected. Check your train before travelling and consider a pre-booked road transfer if necessary.
  • Arriving by train: Where possible, consider travelling on Tuesday, 13 October, or selecting services outside the announced strike period. Please note that services outside the strike hours are not necessarily guaranteed.

Getting to the Symposium venue

The EOSC Symposium 2026 takes place at:

Palazzo dei Congressi
Piazza Adua 1, Florence, Italy

The venue is located only a short walk (approximately 5 minutes) from Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station, making walking the easiest option for participants arriving by train or tram.

Useful information and live updates

We encourage all participants to monitor official transport information on 13 and 14 October, as the extent of disruption will depend on participation in the strike.
