The 8th seminar in the series “Opening science: Practice and perspectives” in 2024 is organised by the Lublin University Association in partnership with Elsevier. In less than a decade since the first seminar, which took place in 2016 in Krakow, we have been observing dynamic changes in Poland regarding broadly understood openness in science.

In this process of change, academic libraries, university presses, research support and funding institutions, and academics themselves play an active role. All of these entities work towards the overarching goal of achieving scientific excellence.

Previous seminars discussed the challenges facing the academic community in the context of open science. This year’s seminar will focus on strategies for both development and stabilisation of activities already underway. It will also consider strategies for recovery, which are reflected in newly emerging and updated open access policies.

The detailed topics that will be discussed at the seminar include:

  1. Strategies for increasing engagement of the academic community and shaping a culture of open science:
    • practical ways of implementing the assumptions of open science, research data management,
    • in particular the security of research data and their long-term archiving.
  2. Strategy for building capacity and human capital in open science:
    • the search for ambassadors and data stewards and their role in the academic environment,
    • competencies and requirements of new specialties: data librarian and data steward.
  3. Strategy for the development of open science in Poland in the context of international activities:
    • policies and procedures,
    • international initiatives in the area of open science.
  4. Embedding artificial intelligence (AI) development strategies in open science activities.
