Case study
The Scientific Open Access Repositories of Portugal (RCAAP Portal) is a national open access initiative aimed at storing, preserving and promoting access to scientific knowledge generated in Portugal. The RCAAP Portal provides access to thousands of scientific articles, theses, dissertations, and other types of publications from Portuguese repositories, scientific journals of higher education institutions, and other research and development organisations.
Problem addressed
Before the establishment of the RCAAP Portal, Portugal’s scientific output was scattered, poorly visible, and lacked standardised metadata and interoperability. Many institutions lacked the technical capacity or resources to maintain repositories, open access was rare, and compliance with Open Science policies was hard to monitor. The RCAAP Portal helped to address these gaps by preserving, standardising, and improving access to research outcomes in Portugal, while providing technical services and continuous support.
Added value
Applying Common Standard Metadata, the OpenAIRE 4.0 Schema, to ensure interoperability and enhance data discoverability.
Integrating with the CRIS Framework to maintain data consistency, streamline reporting, and strengthen the Open Science and research infrastructure of Portugal.
Providing a support tool for open access monitoring to enable tracking, reporting, and verification of Open Access compliance, ensuring transparency and accountability to funders.
