Good practice
The INGV Open Data Portal is a catalogue designed to list and describe all scientific data published by Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) using multiple metadata standards. It also provides a service for internal administration managers, researchers, and external users by facilitating efficient data management. Managed by the Institutional Data Management Office, both the portal and the office were established under the Institutional Data Policy, which has been in effect since 2018.
Problem addressed
The INGV Open Data Portal tracks all publicly available data from INGV across various heterogeneous data platforms. It centralises the DOI minting process to streamline data identification, description, access and linkage to both financing projects and related scientific publications. The portal ensures high-quality metadata in multiple standards, making it easier to find, share, and use the data effectively.
Added value
Using a data management tool to share open data of a research-performing organisation, following internationally recognised standards.
Establishing a tool that facilitates the outcomes of an institutional data policy.
Potentially acting as an end-point providing (meta)data to a future Italian EOSC node or the EOSC EU Node.
