SUMMARY:PLOS and SciLifeLab webinar: Navigating Open Science policies
DESCRIPTION:Open Science policies are rapidly evolving\, but many researchers find them to be vague and difficult to navigate. These policies often lack clear\, actionable guidelines for how researchers can respond to requirements while ensuring they meet research community\, national\, and international standards. The webinar Navigating Open Science policies: Practical guidance for researchers on sharing data and software will briefly summarise the current landscape of selected open science policies. Through real-world examples from PLOS and SciLifeLab\, attendees will gain practical insights into how these policies are being implemented and how to align their work with both institutional and national requirements and monitoring initiatives. The session will offer valuable tools and strategies for ensuring compliance and promoting open science practices in a way that is both manageable and impactful. \n  \nPresenters: \nEmily Chenette\, Editor-in-Chief\, PLOS One \nAgata Morka\, Regional Director\, Publishing Development (Europe) at PLOS \nChristopher Erdmann\, Head of Open Science\, SciLifeLab \nCo-hosts: \nParul Tewatia\, Project coordinator (FAIR Metadata and Semantic Technologies)\, SciLifeLab \nSuné Joubert\, Project coordinator (Open Science Communities and Metrics)\, SciLifeLab \n

SUMMARY:Citizen Science Day
DESCRIPTION:This event is held in the Czech language. \nCitizen Science Day celebrates the general public’s involvement in scientific inquiry. Citizens contribute to scientific research by\, for example\, collecting data\, observing nature\, or analysing information. \nJoin us for a unique Citizen Science Day event at IT4Innovations at VSB-TUO! Discover the fascinating world of Citizen Science and find out how you can be part of this global activity. You will use simple online tools or mobile apps to collect and submit data for scientific purposes. There will be interactive workshops where you will try to build a sensor to measure air quality and many other exciting projects that will immerse you in scientific research.

SUMMARY:Open Science Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Open Science Retreat is a week full of scientific discussions and reflections\, getting work done\, making new friends and resetting. \nThe Retreat follows an unconference model. Except for the plenary sessions\, all activities are optional. All outputs of the various topic teams that arise are made publicly available. \nTo get an idea of what kinds of things come from the OS Retreat\, check out the outputs of the 2024 edition in this Research Equals Collection and the outputs of the 2023 edition in this newsletter. More info can be found on the Open Science Retreat website. \nWhile the majority of the retreat is in the unconference format\, this year we want to source a few workshops from the community no longer than 2-3 hours to complement the program. We invite you to submit an abstract with your workshop idea on any topics related to open science\, well-being\, or career development! \nWhy should you attend an Open Science retreat\n\nLearn from peers in different stages of their career\, share insights and experiences in open science and build valuable collaborations. Be prepared to be inspired and challenged!\nParticipate in a hands-on unconference style team in the mornings to develop practical skills in open science methodologies and more.\nEngage in thought-provoking discussions around the challenges and opportunities in implementing open science practices. Your voice matters!\nBenefit from coaching and join our mentoring scheme;\nEnjoy the serene and picturesque surroundings of our retreat location\, the perfect backdrop for one-on-one talks\, creativity\, relaxation\, and rejuvenation.\n\nImportant dates\nDec 10\, 2024: Participant Applications & Workshop Abstract Submissions Open \nFeb 5\, 2025: Participation Applications & Workshop Abstract Submissions Close

SUMMARY:Promoting Open Science at universities
DESCRIPTION:Open Science – just the next buzz word or a remarkable development? Open Science (OS) seems to pop up here and there\, often in embellished contexts that suggest a tendency towards arbitrariness. However\, if one looks at the development of the policies of funding agencies\, e.g.\, for the framework programs of the European Commission\, the increase in mandatory deliverables assigned to OS shows a certain relevance of the movement. As a member of the Arqus European University Alliance\, the University of Graz is committed to promoting OS and to coordinating efforts to improve openness within and outside the Alliance. The Arqus Open Science Ambassador Network is dedicated to sharing best practices\, supporting students and researchers in OS practice and leveraging synergies between member universities to advocate for OS. The point is not to fall into ideology\, but to become aware of opportunities and risks by critically reflecting on areas of tension. \nHildrun Walteris researcher in science communication at the University of Graz since 2019. Her research focuses on the evaluation of science communication strategies and formats. She is interested in how open science practices and participatory approaches in research can influence the societal perception of science.

SUMMARY:Meet the SoftWare Hash Identifier: Do one thing and do it well
DESCRIPTION:The “Meet the SoftWare Hash Identifier: Do one thing and do it well” webinar will take place on Tuesday April 29th\, from 14:00-16:00 CEST. Registration for the workshop is free but mandatory. \nSoftware identification is essential to ensure long-term traceability of scholarly outputs but as often\, when it comes to software\, things are not as easy as they seem. Research software identification looks like an investigation and calls for tailored solutions. The SoftWare Hash Identifier (SWHID)\, which is under an ISO standardisation process\, provides actionable solutions to the end-users as well as to the repositories managers\, metadata curators\, etc. \nMorane Gruenpeter\, Head of Open Science at Software Heritage\, will share with the audience key insights about research software identification: What is at stake? What is the added value of the SWHID? How does the SWHID articulate with other types of identifiers? The session aims at supporting the supporters\, to prepare them to address the most frequent questions. Last but not least\, the audience will be invited to go beyond the technical aspects and to reflect about criteria of trust. The session is designed to be collaborative. Sabrina Granger\, Open Science Community Manager at Software Heritage\, will facilitate the participants’ journey. \nThis workshop is open to all but intended for those working as data/research stewards\, research software engineers\, data repositories\, and data service providers. Basic knowledge of persistent identifiers is desired.
