DESCRIPTION:The National Library of Armenia is honoured to invite you to the international conference “Heritage Preservation for a Sustainable Future” dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the National Library of Armenia. The conference aims to unite the field’s leading and young professionals from around the world and serve as a platform for the exchange of international library\, museum\, archive\, publishing and other organizations’ experience\, discussion of current issues\, innovative presentations\, as well as the introduction of accepted international standards\, management systems\, technologies\, and theoretical and practical processes. \nTo participate in the conference with a presentation (physically or remotely) please fill in the application and send it to  nlaconference2024@gmail.com by 15 April\, 2024. DESCRIPTION:The event will provide a self-paced online learning experience for learners who would like to dive into the depths of Galaxy data analysis. The event is similar to the Smörgåsbord\, but the program will be more structured. On Monday learners can get to know Galaxy and its various functionalities. Between Tuesday and Thursday\, learners can choose from different Tracks that they are interested in. Friday will be dedicated to shorter topics. This track system can assist with onboarding or in-depth understanding of facets of one research area. The learners will still choose their program for the week\, but the track structure will provide guidance on what order will help them achieve their individual learning goals. SUMMARY:Bringing EOSC Task Force Outcomes to the Austrian Research Data Management Community

DESCRIPTION:The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and Directorate-General for Communications Networks\, Content and Technology (DG CNECT) are organising a technical launch event of the EOSC EU Node online on 10 October 2024 at 9.30 – 13.15 CEST. \nSupporting the EU’s Policy of Open Science\, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to give the EU a global lead in research data management and ensure that scientists in Europe enjoy the full benefits of data-driven science. To foster the development of EOSC\, the European Commission has deployed into production the EOSC EU Node in the form of managed services provided by third-party contractors. \nThe online launch event will focus on a technical demonstration of the EOSC EU Node\, provided by the contractors at first hand\, who are also responsible for the operations\, maintenance and support of the services. \nA panel on the buildup of the EOSC Federation will reflect on the importance of this milestone\, its impact on the future development of EOSC\, on the buildup of the EOSC Federation and on the broader adoption of Open Science principles. The EOSC Symposium 2024 will be a critical event on the path to EOSC post-2027\, and will build on the success and momentum established by the 2023 event\, while also expanding the potential for on-site participation. \nEOSC Symposium 2024 will take place under the patronage of the German Minister for Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger. SUMMARY:International Open Access Week
DESCRIPTION:The theme of International Open Access Week for 2024 will continue with last year’s focus on “Community over Commercialization.” This theme contributed to a growing recognition of the need to prioritize approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community. Taking the unprecedented step to build on this theme for a second year highlights the importance of this conversation and presents the opportunity to turn more of these deliberations into collective action. \nThe many questions surfaced by the theme last year are even more pressing in 2024 given recent developments\, such as the rush to integrate artificial intelligence into commercial academic systems without community consultation. Ongoing critical questions include: What are the consequences when a small number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves? What are the hidden costs of business models that entrench extreme levels of profit while exacerbating inequity? When does the opaque collection and use of personal data by commercial platforms begin to undermine academic freedom? When and in what ways can commercialization align with the public interest? What community-governed infrastructures already exist that better serve the interests of the research community and the public (such as preprint servers\, repositories\, and open publishing platforms)? How can we shift the default toward using these community-minded options? \nCommunities are encouraged to adapt the theme to their local context and add to it to highlight specific conversations they wish to focus on. Examples might include “Community over Commercialization: What is Community Governance & Why Does it Matter\,” “Community over Commercialization: Reclaiming Academic Autonomy\,” or “Community over Commercialization: Centering Equity in Knowledge Production.” Customizable graphics templates are available for the community to promote these locally adapted themes. \nOpen Access Week 2024 will be held from October 21st through the 27th; however\, anyone is encouraged to host discussions and take action whenever is most suitable during the year. SUMMARY:National Open Science Festival 2024 at Maastricht University
DESCRIPTION:Maastricht University (UM) will be the venue for the National Open Science Festival on 22 October 2024 at the School of Business and Economics (SBE). Since the founding of Open Science NL\, it has taken over the organisation of the festival and made an annual budget available for it. However\, the National Open Science Festival is truly a festival for and by the community. The organising committee of the 2024 edition comprises staff from UM\, Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS)\, National Coordination Point Research Data Management (LCRDM) and Open Science NL. Additionally\, a programme committee reflecting the broad Open Science community is currently being formed. Read more about this event on the website of Open Science NL. \nRegistration\nThe opening of registration will be announced via the Open Science NL website and newsletter\, as well as via DANS\, LCRDM\, UM and OSCNL. Furthermore\, the National Open Science Festival will once again feature its own website\, offering people the opportunity to sign up as presenters for programme components or register as visitors. \nThe importance of Open Science at UM\nThe aim of Open Science is to strengthen collaboration\, both among individual researchers and between other parties and scientists. Open Science makes research more transparent\, controllable\, faster\, more efficient\, reproducible and more sustainable. DESCRIPTION:For the fifteenth time\, the University of Lodz is organising the Open Access Seminar as part of the International Open Science Week. For over a dozen years\, we have been inviting the academic community to discuss topics that are key to the development of the idea of ​​open science in Poland\, and in 2024 we have identified the place of open science in the evaluation and assessment of scientific activities as such a topic. Therefore\, we are organising a discussion panel at the University of Lodz Library with the participation of experts who will share various experiences and perspectives with us – and with each other. We want to discuss topics such as: (absence) of open science in evaluation\, non-bibliometric aspects of the evaluation of scientific activities\, the specificity of the discipline and evaluation criteria\, initiatives to improve the science evaluation system (especially the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment: CoARA)\, possible directions of development of the Polish system for assessing science and scientists. \nWe hope that the debate initiated as part of the Seminar will become a field for exchanging views and will familiarise the academic community with the assumptions and postulates of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment\, which the University of Lodz joined in 2022. \nThis year’s edition of Open Access Week will be held on October 21-27\, 2024\, under the slogan “Community over Commercialisation” – a continuation of last year’s edition. \nContact the organisers: openaccess@lib.uni.lodz.pl

SUMMARY:Strengthening the policy of openness in science at the University of Warsaw
DESCRIPTION:In modern scientific communication\, the sharing of research results and data is increasingly based on principles of openness\, verifiability\, and replicability. Although the movement toward widespread and open access to knowledge is growing\, it has not yet become the standard. The equitable distribution of knowledge and universal participation in it play a crucial role in the development and democratisation of societies. However\, despite technological advancements\, significant barriers to free access to knowledge remain. \nThe launch of two new repositories at the University of Warsaw\, aimed at facilitating the sharing of scientific achievements and access to research data\, prompts the university to consider how best to promote access to science. What is necessary to achieve this? Is it solely about technological and legislative solutions? How should the rules of access to knowledge be regulated? What practices are already in place in Poland and worldwide? \nThe University of Warsaw’s participation in the 4EU+ Alliance offers a unique opportunity to compare and learn from European universities that are more advanced in the realm of open science. This collaboration fosters the integration into the international scientific community\, which undoubtedly enhances the quality of science and education at the University of Warsaw and elevates its prestige. \nPresentations by representatives from partner universities in Germany\, France\, Italy\, the Czech Republic\, and Denmark will showcase European best practices and innovative solutions. Additionally\, speakers from Poland will discuss specific initiatives at Warsaw’s universities and broader issues related to the dissemination of science that concern researchers nationwide. \nThe organisers hope that the presentations and discussions will provide a comprehensive view of openness in Polish science and that the conference will contribute to the development of this idea among researchers\, PhD candidates\, students\, and all others interested in scientific achievements. \nParticipation in the conference is free of charge. \nPlease note: the number of places is limited. Program committee member Hannah Mihai explains: \n“This year\, we have worked to reflect the significant overlap between our fields in the structure of our conference program. None of our fields stand entirely alone\, and we need each other’s expertise.
