SUMMARY:I-ADOPT Framework for FAIR variables and metadata description - Event 2
DESCRIPTION:The topic of the training \nThe aim of the I-ADOPT initiative is to produce an Interoperability Framework\, co-developed by a wide community of terminology experts\, for representing observable properties. This effort will have a strong focus on observable properties in environmental research because it leverages existing efforts to accurately encode what was measured\, observed\, derived\, or computed in relation to the earth systems.\nThe framework has been developed by an RDA working group\, dedicated to this topic.\nThe aim is to create FAIRer observable property terminologies\, the global effectiveness of tools operating upon them will be improved and their impact increased. This will thus strengthen existing collaborations and build new connections between terminology developers and providers\, disciplinary experts from across the various domains of Earth and Environmental Science\, and representatives of scientific data user groups. \nThe RDA I-ADOPT framework offers a way to compile clear and unambiguous definitions of variables in a standardised way. It helps you to describe concepts at different levels\, ranging from overarching classes (“soil composition”) down to the very detailed (“soil water content\, measured in a mineral soil matrix below root depth”). You can create and register your own definitions\, or reuse those of others\, and once in place use them to tag your RI’s datasets.\nThe formalized descriptions empower FAIR in many ways\, for example by facilitating searches across data portals (F+A) and enabling machine-driven interpretation and use of data and metadata (I+R). \nTo learn more about the I-ADOPT framework and how your RI can benefit\, please check the website.

SUMMARY:Monitoring EOSC readiness: FAIR data policies
DESCRIPTION:The ambition of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is to provide a  ‘multi-disciplinary environment where researchers can publish\, find and re-use data\, tools and services\, enabling them to better conduct their work’. The realisation of the EOSC vision depends upon the availability of FAIR data (i.e.\, those data that are findable\, accessible\, interoperable and reusable). The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) defines the general framework for future research\, development and innovation activities in relation to the EOSC and identified the availability of standardised national Open Science and FAIR data strategies\, including the description of these policies\, as a key priority to enable the continuous monitoring of the landscape with regards to EOSC readiness. \nThis workshop will share recent work undertaken by the EOSC Association to monitor additional activities and define key performance indicators relating to FAIR data policies; share the key aims of a survey on policy monitoring currently being carried out with Member States; and introduce solutions being developed by EOSC Future and FAIRsFAIR to support comparable policy monitoring moving forward. The workshop will allow ample time for questions and discussion. This event will be useful for a broad range of stakeholders who are interested in – or may need to contribute to – the ongoing monitoring of the policy landscape at different levels. \nProgramme and registration > www.fairsfair.eu

SUMMARY:OstData Final Workshop
DESCRIPTION:New Horizons for Research on and in Central and Eastern Europe: \nThe Role of Research Data Infrastructures \nThe workshop has two objectives: first\, it will discuss strategies to strengthen the inclusion of research communities in Eastern\, Central\, and Southeast Europe in efforts to build pan-European research infrastructures for data management. Second\, it will present ideas to widen the publication of research data in the humanities and social sciences\, e.g. by increased recognition for academic careers.\nFor the future of Area Studies the digital accessibility of data is of crucial importance. A number of national and transnational initiatives are already building sustainable and accessible digital research data infrastructures\, such as OstData (funded by the German Research Foundation\, DFG) for East\, Central\, and Southeast European Studies. OstData crosses disciplinary and national boundaries\, and incentivises the archiving and publication of research data along the FAIR principles.\nHow can such specialized projects be integrated into pan-European efforts to create electronic research infrastructures? What can we learn from digital efforts in Eastern Europe? How can we prevent a new digital West-East divide to emerge? How can we expand the interface between humanities and social sciences research and the development of research data infrastructures? What are the challenges of translation between disciplinary cultures\, and between languages in the creation of electronic infrastructures?\nBy discussing these questions\, this workshop facilitates a dialogue between projects such as OstData and national as well as pan-European initiatives\, e.g. the NFDI in Germany or ESFRI and EOSC on the European level. For the achievement of the EU’s goal to strengthen the participation of New Member and Eastern Neighbourhood countries in the European Research Area\, the participation of Eastern\, Central\, and Southeast Europe in transnational research infrastructures is of decisive significance. \nVenue: \nKooperationsstelle EU der Wissenschaftsorganisationen KoWi\n(EU Liaison Office of the German Research Organisations) \nRue du Trône 98 / 8th Floor\nB-1050 Brussels \nRoundtable:\nTue\, 15/2 (18.00)\nDiscussants: Ute Gunsenheimer (EOSC\, Brussels)\, Peter Haslinger (NFDI\, Germany)\, N.N. (ESFRI)*\, N.N. (Higher School of Economics\, Moscow)* \nDigital research data infrastructures are an important tool for expanding scientific cooperation beyond the borders of the EU. They are crucial for connecting the Eastern Neighbourhood countries to the European Research Area. Yet there is a notable lack of coherent strategies to achieve this goal.\nThis roundtable will also discuss strategies to fully exploit the creativity of data scientists in Eastern Europe and to connect the different efforts. \nOstData Final Workshop: \nNew Horizons for Research on and in Central and Eastern Europe: \nThe Role of Research Data Infrastructures \nPreliminary Programme: \nTue\, 15/2 (15.00-17.00)\n15.00 Keynote: N.N. SUMMARY:South African - EU Dialogue workshop
DESCRIPTION:The main outcome of the SA-EU Dialogue is a SA Open Science Cloud (SAOSC) Framework that will lead to the establishment of a SAOSC focused on research\, development\, and innovation. The Framework should be aligned with the envisaged Open Science Policy (currently under development) led by the DSI; cognisant of the Data and Cloud Policy of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT).\nThe SAOSC Framework will include a set of policy-based recommendations for the implementation of the South African Open Science Cloud (SAOSC) as part of an Open Science enabling environment. Guidelines and principles on critical aspects such as governance and management\, resourcing\, policies\, monitoring and evaluation\, and technologies enabling Open Science will be addressed in this dialogue.\nThe successful development of the Framework will require broad-based consultations and inputs from stakeholders across the entire National System of Innovation\, government departments and the private sector. To facilitate this broad-based consultation\, a town-hall stakeholder (including international participants) workshop is planned for 3 February 2022. \nThe workshop format is envisaged as a one day hybrid workshop comprising an introductory plenary of dignitaries; the DSI context; an EOSC keynote address; and overview presentations on four thematic area by a leading authority in that area.\nSimultaneous breakaways will follow\, co-ordinated by a facilitator to allow for specialised discussions in each area\, with a mix of SA and international presenters\, and with a moderator/rapporteur to report back to the final plenary. The breakaway sessions will be structured by a high-level speaker who will be invited to share the current thinking in the international discussion on each thematic area; allowing local lead services to respond to start the debate. \nTHEMATIC AREAS: \nThe set of thematic areas that is recommended to focus the discussion at the Workshop are: \n(A) GOVERNANCE \n\nPolicy and Legal Frameworks\nGovernance model\nGlobal and local partnership and participation\nResearcher engagement and adoption\n\n(B) TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION \n\nPlatforms and services\nIdentity management\nResearch software\nOrganizational structure\n\n(C) DATA QUALITY \n\nFAIR metrics\nPID adoption\nData stewardship\n\n(D) SUSTAINABILITY \n\nFunding models\nCapacity building and career development

SUMMARY:Science Mesh Workshop – Global Platform for Scientific Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:The main goal of the Science Mesh Workshop “Global Platform for Scientific Collaboration”\, co-located with the CS3 2022 Congress\, is to dialogue with early adopters and potential vendors that will contribute to the final development\, deployment and adoption of the Science Mesh. The Science Mesh is a global collaboration service for researchers\, educators\, data curators and analysts based on OCM (Open Cloud Mesh) and CS3APIs (Connect Storage and Application Providers). It provides an interoperable platform to easily share & deploy application and software components\, while providing rich collaborative workflows. \nThe day also brings out insights around the needs of ESFRI European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures clusters and their related infrastructures in terms of data sync and share. The ESFRI clusters\, from a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines\, have strong links with research communities\, manage significant data volumes\, and develop/operate discipline-specific data analytics tools\, while facilitation access to research data for incorporation into EOSC. We will understand what these challenges are and how the Science Mesh can support the ESFRI in overcoming the referred challenges\, while contributing to Open Science. \nThis workshop is a follow up from last year workshop “Moving Towards the Adoption Phase for Science Mesh”\, co-located at the CS3 2021 Congress. \nEOSC Association Director Ignacio Blanquer is introducing the session on “EOSC and Science Mesh – Overcoming data challenges”\, chaired by Ron Trompert (CS3MESH4EOSC) and featuring Pierre-Yves Burgi (EOSC Long-Term Data Preservation TF)\, Alvaro López (EOSC Technical Interoperability of Data and Services TF)\, and Roberto Di Cosmo (EOSC Infrastructures for Quality Research Software TF) \nSave your seat \nKey Benefits of participating in the Workshops\nFrom this Science Mesh workshop\, you will: \n\nUnderstand applications and usage of the Science Mesh through demonstrations\nGrab the opportunity to embrace research opportunities on Enterprise file synchronisation and sharing (EFSS) product development;\nLearn about how to adopt Science Mesh and increase the offer of services for collaborative research and working environments;\nSee how Science Mesh responds to the goals of the CS3 Community;\nJoin collaboration opportunities on connecting data\nGain a whole new understanding of how Science Mesh supports European policies regarding the research infrastructures and open science.\nLearn about how Science Mesh benefits you regarding managing\, sync and sharing your data in an easier way.\n\nWho should attend?\nAll those interested in making the friction-free collaboration in Europe a reality\, where users can access an interoperable federation of data\, to easily sync\, share and deploy applications and software. SUMMARY:FAIRsFAIR 2022 final event
DESCRIPTION:FAIRsFAIR is pleased to welcome you to the very last stop of their long and extremely exciting journey that started in 2019! Between January 25th and 27th\, FAIRsFAIR partners and stakeholders will meet for a series of concluding meetings taking place online to deep-dive into the results of FAIRsFAIR. \nAt FAIRsFAIR2022\, the project and its stakeholders will analyse the impact that FAIRsFAIR has had on the European Research Community. They will also go through the tools\, guidelines and best practices that FAIRsFAIR have produced and delivered to researchers\, data stewards\, decision makers and funders towards a better\, more structured approach towards FAIR data management. The FAIRsFAIR project will take the recommendations produced and the lessons learnt and leave them as a legacy for future activities to come. \nDANS is the coordinator of FAIRsFAIR\, and as one of the core partners is closely involved in most of the project’s work packages. \nFAIRsFAIR Final Event \nThe core of these three days will be the FAIRsFAIR Final Event on Wednesday 26th of January. Forget about power-points and online surveys: grab an armchair and a coffee\, make yourself comfortable and join us. We promise you an out of the ordinary fresh take on an online event! \nPublic Session\, Wednesday 26th of January\, 14:00 – 17:00 CET \nResearch is open and without borders. The FAIR principles are not just a European matter. That’s why the event will be opened by a keynote speaker that will bring an international perspective and will tell us how FAIR is approached in… well\, we can’t tell you any more yet! \nDuring this session\, representatives from FAIRsFAIR will debate on the core aspects of implementing FAIR with outstanding representatives of the European and international research community. How can we ensure the sustainability of FAIR practices? How are universities in Europe implementing and ensuring implementation of FAIR policies by students\, educators and trainers? How do we combine the FAIR principles with data preservation in the long-term? And last but not least: how do we ensure the FAIR principles are truly turned into common practices to be continuously implemented by researchers and supported by funding agencies? \nThe concluding session will look at the national perspective\, asking ourselves how we can ensure that European sovereignty deals with national and language dimensions when dealing\, for instance\, with aspects related to ontologies\, vocabularies and specific local cultural aspects. \nMore information \nPlease register at the FAIRsFAIR event page. SUMMARY:3rd ESFRI RIs -EOSC Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Workshop on the connection of ESFRI Research Infrastructures (RIs) to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) titled will take place on 25 & 26 January 2022\, as an Online Event. \nThe main objective of the workshop is to bring together ESFRI\, ESFRI RIs and EOSC stakeholders\, in order to showcase and better comprehend the EOSC concept\, including the Open Science and “FAIR” policy agenda\, and the vision for the future\, along with the EOSC value proposition for its users\, and ensure an optimal federation of clusters and RIs with EOSC. The event will focus on the current state of EOSC and how the thematic RIs and ESFRI clusters fit into the developing landscape\, including the partnership with the newly established EOSC Association.  The workshop is organised by the ESFRI Task Force on EOSC and the StR-ESFRI2 Project\, in close cooperation with ESFRI and the EC\, and with participatiob from the EOSC Cluster projects\, the EOSC Association Board of Directors\, and the EOSC Future project. \nFor more information on the outcomes of the 2nd ESFRI RIs-EOSC Workshop (Online\, 6 & 7.10.2020)\, please click here. \nMain Concepts \nThe main focus of the 3rd workshop is on how the RI communities and researchers can use and benefit from EOSC\, getting added value. Besides the general benefits of EOSC towards open science and “FAIRification” of data and services\, it is considered that the daily use of EOSC Exchange and concrete tools by the RI users for intra and interdisciplinary research will also greatly benefit EOSC\, in becoming useful and effective\, contributing towards its sustainability. There are two main elements in the connection of RIs to EOSC: RIs as data producers/service providers (offering data/services to EOSC) and RIs as users of generic (non-thematic) EOSC services (consuming services from the EOSC Core and the integrated projects such as EOSC Future). In an effort to shift attention towards the (required) added value of EOSC for the RI communities and end users\, this workshop will focus mainly on the second element. To this aim\, some of the points that will be highlighted during this workshop are: \n\nThe connection of RIs to EOSC\, both ESFRI and other world-class RIs\nThe added value of EOSC for the RI communities and end users. I.e.\, what does EOSC bring to (users of) international RIs\nBringing international RIs up to speed on Open Science and the FAIR policy agenda\, including concrete paradigms from young researchers presenting their work on Open Science and FAIR data\, with possible achievements\, may have positive effects on high-level RI/lab managers.\nThe co-creation between providers and users of the EOSC vision\, in terms of service portfolio for the users\n\nwww.esfri.eu

SUMMARY:Fair Digital Objects Forum
DESCRIPTION:How a vision of the internet of FAIR data & Services becomes a reality \nWednesday 19 January 2022 \n13.00 – 17.00 UTC \nPurpose of the event\nLarge sums of money\, and equally great ambitions\, are already being directed towards developing data/research infrastructures\, forscience and for industry\, and there is no doubt that much additional awareness\, new insights and new types of services and tools will emerge. Despite these huge investments there is no agreed view on how the future data space should be organized\, what its key pillars should be and how access to data will be managed and facilitated. EOSC for example is based on the FAIR principles and a distributed service landscape\, with further specifications currently being derived by expert Task Forces. Similar to the ESFRI process\, NFDI relies on a process of discipline-driven infrastructure building\, while recognizing that this leaves a gap to be bridged with respect to common services and standards. NIH Commons a conceptual framework for a digital environment was designed to allow efficient storage\, manipulation\, and sharing of research objects. Meanwhile\, big industry is defining strategies for offering services on data based on proprietary binding mechanisms\, seriously hampering innovation. \nThis panel will initiate a discussion across initiatives about major organizational principles and key pillars\, and is intended as the first of a series of meetings on this topic. Its goal\, therefore\, is to identify major aspects that need to be considered when examining the emerging future global data space. For this purpose\, we invited four “thinkers” whom we know dare to look ahead without being bound by current projects and political considerations. \nMore info and registration >> www.fairdo.org

SUMMARY:Evidence-based Policymaking in Europe Summit 2021
DESCRIPTION:The convergence of Cloud\, Big Data and AI has already resulted in major transformation across Government services\, yet the process of policy making itself is often left behind. Join Policy Cloud\, Decido\, AI4PublicPolicy\, DUET and Intelcomp at the virtual Evidence Based Policy Making in Europe event to explore major challenges\, trends and opportunities to improve public sector decision making that will deliver healthier\, happier places to live and work. \nDigital technologies have changed the world. Today people expect faster\, seamless\, on-demand services from their providers\, and Government is no exception. For effective urban operations which make life easier for residents\, workers and visitors\, Public Sector decision making needs to become more agile\, breaking down data silos to combine day-to-day tactical decisions with longer term policies and strategies. Disruptive technologies such as Digital Twins\, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High Performance Computing (HPC) unlock new opportunities for sustainable decision making through visualisations\, simulations and predictions that enhance transparency\, increase public support and involvement\, and optimise resources. \nTo support this transformation\, Policy Cloud\, Decido\, AI4PublicPolicy\, DUET and Intelcomp pan-European projects and initiatives dedicated to using cloud for data-driven policy\, have joined forces to host Evidence Based Policy Making in Europe\, a premier conference for government that focuses purely on data and tools for decision making. Together with leading change agents from the European Commission and Local Government the event will explore the new decision-making ecosystems being built by cities and administrations\, including the use cases being adopted\, and the innovative data and tools being adopted for modern policy making. \nTaking place virtually on the 9th and 10th of December\, 2021\, here’s what to expect: \n\nUse Cases: Speakers were asked to bring real-life examples of how they are transforming the traditionally slow deliberative policy making process in the fields of health\, climate change and mobility\, to one that is more agile and responsive. Hear directly from cities themselves on how they are developing better evidence-based policies which adapt as new data comes to light\, and which are trusted and contributed to by relevant stakeholders who feel engaged in the process.\nTools: See how city managers and policy makers are co-creating data-driven decision-making ecosystems with cutting edge tools which enable them to visualise\, analyse and even predict the complex impact of decisions across multiple domains\, time and space. Be hands-on with AI\, big data and digital twin demos and be inspired by what you could potentially achieve for your administration.\nStrategies: Learn how to manage legal\, ethical and standards challenges and constraints in our increasingly digital world.  From best practices to principles and legislation our speakers will help you understand and navigate the complex environment in pragmatic ways that will get you started on your journey.\n\nEOSC Association Director Suzanne Dumouchel is one of the speakers at the event\, taking part in the plenary on Day 2 “Innovative Tools for Evidence Based Policy – from digital disruption to digital adoption”. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Establishing a Knowledge Exchange Space at the OntoCommons Global Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Industry 5.0 aims to support the transformation of manufacturing sites into more digital and environmentally friendly solutions and industrial processes. This new technology supports the long-term strategy for the European industrial future that aims to have better data quality\, close connection of scientific and research infrastructures and cooperation with industrial players that can contribute to an efficient economic and societal framework. \nThe OntoCommons project plays a relevant role in this context as it addresses the need of strengthen the interoperability of industrial solutions through the establishment of common semantic basis in different domains (e.g. materials and manufacturing) that supports the improvements of digital interactions\, collaborations\, co-innovation\, re-use and valorisation of data. \nIn order to enrich the collaboration in this area\, the OntoCommons consortium is organising its first Global Workshop with external experts and initiatives. The event offers a platform for all stakeholders to interact and exchange information and updates\, and contributions to the content of the OntoCommons Roadmap (policy recommendations towards data sharing in the European Single Market). \nThe workshop combines open\, topic-based discussions in organised groups with custom-designed engagement of stakeholders through low-level prototyping of novel use cases and emerging scenarios. \nParticipants can join plenary talks\, impulse talks\, moderated sessions and learn more about the main objectives of the project\, the latest studies in the ontology and industrial fields\, while interacting with the project members and experts in the area. \nThe EOSC Association at the 1st OntoCommons Global Workshop\nEOSC Association President Karel Luyben is taking part in a session on Establishing a Knowledge Exchange Space on 3 November 2021 at 11:45 CET\, chaired by Yann Le Franc (e-Science Data Factory)\, together with Florina Piroi (TU Wien)\, Barbara Magagna (GO FAIR)\, and Hilary Hanahoe (RDA). He is offering an overview of EOSC and participating in the panel discussion. \nProgramme and registration
