SUMMARY:Open Science in the light of geopolitical polarisation
DESCRIPTION:The current geopolitical landscape is characterised by rising political and trade tensions as well as heightened economic interest in scientific innovation. This polarisation has significant implications for the global scientific community\, particularly in the pursuit of Open Science. Could the naivety of science be exploited? Where is the line between scientific idealism and naivety? \nAs major global powers engage in systemic rivalries\, the conduct of science is increasingly influenced by national security concerns\, export controls\, and sanctions that can restrict the free flow of ideas\, data\, and researchers across borders. Meanwhile\, global challenges such as pandemics\, climate change\, and technology-based development require international scientific collaboration and universal knowledge development. The normative nature of the scientific ethos is increasingly in tension with political forces that demand that science be both vigilant and competitive. \nHow can Open Science – with its emphasis on transparency\, collaboration\, efficiency and validity of scientific results – be sustained in the light of these competing interests? \nDuring this year’s Open Science Days\, we will explore these tensions by discussing the interrelations of Open Science\, political interests\, and innovation. We will ask how research organizations can reconcile Open Science policies with resilience and competitiveness. \n\n\nAbout Open Science Days\nThe Open Science Days (OSD) are periodically organised by the Max Planck Digital Library. \nIn the context of this conferences we deal with various aspects of a global movement towards a more open\, transparent and reproducible approach to science. Aside from invited expert talks\, participants get the opportunity to present their own ideas\, experiences\, initiatives or activities in a Lightning Talk session. It is an open discussion platform around current Open Science developments. \nThe hybrid event is directed at researchers and specialists outside the Max Planck Society as well as within. It is for anyone\, who is interested in an interdisciplinary communication about Open Science.

SUMMARY:United Nations Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference
DESCRIPTION:The right to participate in & benefit from science\nDespite significant commitments\, billions of people – especially in developing countries – still lack meaningful access to participate in and benefit from critical scientific knowledge\, research infrastructure\, and emerging technologies. Open science and open scholarship provide a transformative pathway to reverse these trends\, fostering multilateral cooperation\, responsible innovation\, and the equitable dissemination of knowledge. As stated in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, we must ensure “reciprocal access to science for all producers and consumers of knowledge regardless of their location\, nationality\, race\, age\, gender\, income\, socio-economic circumstance\, career stage\, discipline\, language\, religion\, disability\, ethnicity\, migratory status or any other grounds”. \nOrganised by the United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Library of the Department of Global Communications in collaboration with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs\, Division of Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO’s Division of Science Policy and Capacity-Building\, the 4th United Nations Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference will serve as a platform to advance these principles as key priorities in the international agenda for implementing the Pact for the Future. From 16-18 October\, 2025\, the conference will convene policymakers\, IGO representatives\, researchers\, scholars\, librarians\, publishers\, and civil society\, both online and in person United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo\, Japan. It will serve as an urgent call to accelerate transformations in science and scholarship in alignment with actions 28-33 of the Pact of the Future\, to map progress in national and international efforts towards opening the record of science\, and to inspire collaborative actions and coalitions to expedite progress ensuring no country\, community\, or individual is left behind.

SUMMARY:9th Open Science Retreat: Diamond OA: Utopian Dream or the Only Fair Future?
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the 9th Open Science Retreat – this time with a focus on Diamond Open Access. \nDiamond Open Access has gained increasing attention in recent years as a community-led\, equitable model for scholarly publishing that aligns closely with the principles of Open Science. But is Diamond Open Access the long-awaited solution for equitable scholarly publishing – or merely an idealistic vision? This retreat critically explores the promises and limitations of Diamond OA\, its role in advancing Open Science\, and the role of the scientific community in the success of the model. A view on financing models and a spotlight on successful Diamond OA initiatives will provide practical insights into key success factors and persistent challenges. \nTo guide our discussions\, we propose the following questions: \n\nWhat can the contribution of Diamond OA be to addressing current challenges in scholarly publishing and where does its potential end?\nWhat are effective strategies\, recommendations\, best practices or lessons-learnt to applying AI in a responsible manner for upholding the Open Science principles?\nWhat policy and infrastructure conditions are necessary to ensure Diamond OA can flourish?\n\nJoin for a critical examination of whether Diamond OA is an innovative model or simply the next battleground in the future of publishing. We are looking forward to an exciting retreat – be part of it!

SUMMARY:OASPA2025 Conference on Open Access Scholarly Publishing
DESCRIPTION:OASPA’s annual conference is the only event that brings together the whole of the open access community\, accelerating connection\, discovery and new thinking. Our 2025 conference will focus on the complexities we know we face in asking how we achieve a future with 100% open access. \nCollectively we will consider the key questions that arise from pursuing this goal\, for example\, can pursuit of the goal itself distract us from quality\, sustainability and inclusivity in scholarly communications? Should 100% even be the goal and what do we mean by it? \nHow do we address the crucial underlying issues to tackle in our research culture and with research integrity? Does a focus on transitioning from paywalled to open access content detract from the efforts of those already delivering 100% open access? And how is the wider geopolitical landscape impacting our ambitions?

SUMMARY:ENRIO 2025
DESCRIPTION:The ENRIO 2025 Congress in Ljubljana will continue the newly established series of biennial events addressing research integrity practice (RI) and the development of responsible research in Europe. ENRIO 2025 is organised by the European Network of Research Integrity Offices (ENRIO) and University of Ljubljana\, Slovenia. \nThe Congress is aimed at all experts in research integrity and research ethics\, RI officers and practitioners\, members of ethics and investigation committees\, representatives of research funding organisations and sponsors\, and all interested and involved in the enhancement and sustainable implementation of good RI practices and policies. \nThematically\, the Congress will emphasise power dynamics in research and institutional responsibility to foster an open\, safe and inclusive research environment as a foundation for RI in everyday practice. In a broader global context\, this also implies the recognition of fairness\, equity and diversity as essential components of RI\, as outlined in the Cape Town Statement of 2022. Contributions will reflect the range of challenges\, as well as practical and emerging solutions for prevention and awareness raising. \nRegistration and Call for Abstracts opened in December 2024.
