DESCRIPTION:The 2024 edition of the “Coordination meeting of EOSC-related projects funded under Horizon Europe” will take place on 20-21 June in Brussels.\nAs in previous editions\, the meeting will bring together representatives of project consortia\, the European Commission\, the Research Executive Agency and the EOSC Association. \nThe main objectives of the meeting have been identified by the EC as follows: \n\nTo deepen the collaboration between the consortia involved in EOSC-related projects funded under Horizon Europe\, the EOSC Association and the EC in the context of implementing the EOSC European Partnership and its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA).\nTo provide an update of the contributions made by projects consortia\, the EOSC-A and the EC towards achieving the strategic and operational objectives of the SRIA.\nTo discuss the challenges and next steps for the implementation of EOSC as fully operational\, federated infrastructure that enables the sharing of FAIR data and services across borders and disciplines.\n\nFor reference\, you can find here the report for the 2023 coordination meeting.

DESCRIPTION:The EOSC Association will hold two webinars in June 2024 to explain the purpose of the Questionnaire for parties interested in contributing to the build-up phase of the EOSC Federation and provide guidance on how to complete it. Register to attend the first webinar on Wednesday\, 19 June 2024 between 15:00-16:00 CEST. \nThe Tripartite Governance of EOSC launched the questionnaire to gauge the scale and scope of general interest and readiness for the build-up phase of the EOSC Federation. Interested parties are invited to reply to the questionnaire as the first step in their eligibility to contribute to a testbed of potential EOSC Nodes representing the different stakeholders involved in the research communities of Europe. An overview of the results of the questionnaire will be shared with respondents and will be used to plan the next steps in the building of the EOSC Federation.

DESCRIPTION:Building on the topic of last year’s Theme Call\, the DARIAH Annual Event 2024 will be dedicated to the topic of Workflows: Digital Methods for Reproducible Research Practices in the Arts and Humanities. We are looking for contributions that explore\, assess\, analyse and embody the challenges of designing\, implementing\, documenting and sharing digitally-enabled workflows in the context of arts and humanities research from a technical\, methodological\, infrastructural and conceptual point of view. \nThe Annual Event will be held in person in Lisbon\, Portugal\, June 18-21. The event will be hosted by NOVA FCSH\, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa\, at Avenida de Berna campus of NOVA FCSH. June 18th will be a day for DARIAH internal meetings\, followed by the conference on June 19th to June 21st. Accepted submissions are expected to be presented in-person. \n\n\n\n\nDARIAH is a European Research Infrastructure for the Humanities and Arts. Its mission is to empower scholarly communities with digital methods to create\, connect and share knowledge about culture and society. \n\n\n\n\nThe DARIAH Annual Event offers the DARIAH community and humanities scholars in general the possibility to present results and new ideas; to meet and network. SUMMARY:New Repositories for New Biodiversity Research
DESCRIPTION:Recent technology-driven advances in biodiversity research have created a need for more\, new types of FAIR repositories. In this meetup\, we discuss two of these. Firstly\, the broad and expanding application of AI-based methods in image/sound/text/sequence classification has created a need for repositories for exchanging pre-trained models and their training data. Secondly\, the advent of massively parallel DNA sequencing techniques applied to the environment has shown a large diversity of sequence variants\, whose incremental aggregation in a central repository would enable a more fine-grained assessment of the presence and abundance of distinct haplotypes in the natural environment and in medical settings. In this event\, we will introduce the current research practices and challenges and discuss how the community can proceed in light of these developments. \nThis virtual workshop will take place from 11:00-12:00 CEST on June 13 2024. DESCRIPTION:The e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) organises two open workshops every year\, each under the auspices of the corresponding presidency of the EU Council. The Belgian EU Presidency e-IRG Workshop will be organised as a hybrid event and will bring together e-IRG stakeholders in Brussels\, Belgium\, as well as online and worldwide. The e-IRG events are official EU presidency events which will take place in the framework of the “Conference on Research Infrastructures” and the “ESFRI Forum meeting”\, similar to the Lund events under the Swedish EU presidency. \n  \nThe overarching theme of the event will be “Sustainable e-Infrastructures for research results valorisation“\, in line with BE EU presidency topic. There will be two sessions under the Belgian e-IRG workshop: \nDay 1 – Wednesday 5 June 2024\, 13:30-15:30\nSession 1: Sustaining the role of e-Infrastructures in EOSC and beyond\nThis session aims to continue the discussions from the Valencia e-IRG Workshop and reflect on the draft RI orientation paper for WP 2025-2027 which includes the topic of sustainability of RIs\, and refers to the federation and uptake of e-Infrastructures. The session will also touch upon the concept of federation and role of e-Infrastructures in the new EOSC node-based ecosystem\, especially as e-Infrastructures are not formally part of the nodes ecosystem nor the procurement projects. The sustainability topic of RIs and e-Infrastructures is also relevant to the new ERA policy agenda for 2025-2027. \nDay 1 – Wednesday 5 June 2024\, 16:00-18:00\nSession 2: The e-Infrastructure contribution to data and research outputs valorisation\nOn of the Belgian EU Presidency topics on Research and Innovation is improving the valorisation of research results. This is key for reducing the innovation gap\, and tailoring academic research with the needs of society\, policy-makers and industries\, while stimulating the EU’s industrial recovery and revitalisation. The aim of the session is to highlight the crucial role of e-Inrastructures in this area\, spanning several layers and components\, with a cross-cuting one being the EOSC and thematic (domain-specific) or generic (domain-agnostic) data infrastructures.

DESCRIPTION:The “Research Infrastructures in a Changing Global\, Environmental and Socio-economical Context” conference organised in the frame of the Belgian Presidency of the European Council\, will take place on June 4th and June 5th 2024\, in Brussels\, at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR). \nThe conference will focus on 3 main issues: \n\nResearch Infrastructures (RIs) as key players of strategic autonomy in a changing global context;\nthe socio-economic and environmental impact of RIs;\nthe broad ecosystems of RIs.\n\nResearch infrastructures are increasingly faced with a changing global context\, facing a volatile and unstable geopolitical situation on the global scene\, new and rapidly changing political priorities (open strategic autonomy\, digital and environmental transition\, mission-oriented policies…). This requires flexibility\, capacity to adapt and resilience. RI’s are already confronted with the scarcity of some crucial raw material and disruption in the supply chain. The conference will explore the value of RIs to open strategic autonomy\, their contributions to key political objectives like the Green Deal and look at the broad ecosystem\, the relation with national/regional RIs and other initiatives and instruments. \nThe conference room can accommodate up to 220 participants. SUMMARY:WSIS Action Line C7 E-science: Assessment of progress made over the last 20 years
DESCRIPTION:With the deadline to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) fast approaching\, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is poised to address the critical role of the intersection of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and sciences in accelerating progress towards sustainable development goals. The focus of this panel will be to discuss and debate the most important issues in the intersection of new technologies and science and that will catalyze action around policy reform\, establishing rights-based frameworks\, enhancing digital accessibility\, fostering openness in innovation\, and ensuring inclusive multistakeholder collaboration. The proposal has been developed taking into account the UN’s Key Proposals Across the 12 Commitments. \nThe dynamic interface between eScience and new technologies serves as a critical axis for the future of scientific inquiry and collaboration. In this context\, recognizing the revolutionary influences of developments like artificial intelligence\, big data analytics\, and synthetic data generation on research methodology\, data dissemination\, and collaborative scientific effort become critical. The incorporation of new technologies such as generative AI into the research ecosystem represent a significant leap\, allowing for the automation of difficult analyses\, the generation of novel ideas\, and the acceleration of discoveries across multiple scientific fields. Similarly\, the integration of big data analytics into eScience has unprecedented opportunities for predictive modeling\, trend analysis\, and informed decision-making. Additionally\, the new field of synthetic data generation\, a technology promising to revolutionize research by providing realistic\, yet privacy-compliant datasets. While these technologies can address real time effectiveness of scientific solutions\, they can also generate ethical\, privacy and security risks to humanity. \nWithin these contexts\, opening science and technological democratization can not only be a challenge but also unfold new dimensions for open access to research\, data\, software and scientific infrastructure. DESCRIPTION:Overview: \nThe FAIR Data Spaces project\, coordinated by Fraunhofer\, is at the forefront of integrating services from Gaia-X\, International Data Spaces (IDS)\, the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)\, and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The project has already launched several demonstrators (see Technical Foundations)\, showcasing its practical applications in areas such as biodiversity\, research data quality assurance\, and cross-platform data analysis. To further explore new areas\, the first open call was released inviting companies to develop innovative data exchange scenarios between industry and academia. This call announced three research and development contracts\, each funded with a budget of €60\,000. It takes into account practices and activities that maximise the quality and impact of research. It involves basing assessment primarily on qualitative judgment\, for which peer review is central\, supported by responsible use of quantitative indicators. \nThis two-hour workshop will focus on the topic of research assessment to help the selected candidates to draft their FAIR implementation action plan by taking into account the research assessment aspect. \n  \nSpeakers: \nErzsébet Toth Czifra (CoARA) is the Open Science Officer of DARIAH ERIC where she is responsible for fostering and implementing policies and practices related to the open dissemination of research results in the arts and humanities. Her advocacy activities include charing DARIAH’s research data management working group\, providing workshops\, webinars\, and other training activities to arts and humanities scholars on a regular basis. She is also involved in European science policy making as well as European infrastructure-building projects such as SSHOC\, OPERAS-P and TRIPLE. She received her PhD in Cultural Linguistics and also has a background in scholarly communication.Toth Czifra (CoARA). \nKatarzyna Nawrot holds a PhD in Economics from the Poznan University of Economics (UEP). She is a Professor at the Department of European Studies at the UEP. In the context of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA)\, she is leading an international team dealing with indicators and parameters in the evaluation of science. Their work is based on a community of practice with exchange of knowledge and experiences. It is open to the global level and not restricted to the European one.

DESCRIPTION:A common thread that runs through almost all citizen science initiatives is their collection and generation of data. With the expanding scope of these initiatives\, we are seeing an unprecedented increase in data. This data\, when transformed into knowledge\, is invaluable not only for deepening our understanding of scientific and social phenomena but also for its crucial role in informing evidence-based policy-making. The transition from raw data to knowledge\, however\, is dependent on several factors. Key among these is the application of good data practices and the establishment of comprehensive data infrastructures. Moreover\, for the citizen science community\, embracing the principles of open science\, open data and adhering to the FAIR (Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reusable) standards and CARE principles are crucial steps\, among other strategic approaches\, to fully capitalise on citizen-generated data. \nThis year’s cluster event is set to highlight the importance of strengthening data practices and infrastructures within the European citizen science landscape. The event is structured not to overwhelm with technical data specifics but to offer a welcoming environment for everyone from the citizen science community. The event will act as a forum for gaining a deeper understanding of the essential matters concerning data practices and infrastructures. DESCRIPTION:April’s virtual coffee morning will take place on Wednesday 24 April 2024 at 10.00am for half an hour. \nAs part of the National Action Plan for Open Research\, the National Open Research Forum (NORF) are working with MoreBrains Cooperate and a National Taskforce to develop a national strategy for persistent identifiers (PIDs). \nIn April’s coffee morning the Director of DRI\, Dr. Lisa Griffith\, will offer an overview of PIDs and why they are important\, why we need a national strategy for PIDs\, how we are working to develop that strategy and when it will be launched. \nPlease register in advance for this meeting through Zoom.

DESCRIPTION:OPERAS (Opening Collaboration for Community-Driven Scholarly Communication) Conference 2024\, a highly anticipated event in the world of open scholarly communication\, is set to take center stage. Scheduled to be held on 24-26 April 2024 in Zadar\, Croatia. \nThis conference is organised by the OPERAS-PLUS project to support the development of the OPERAS Research Infrastructure\, supporting open scholarly communication for Social Sciences and Humanities in the European Research Area and to open up collaboration and facilitate exchange. \nThe OPERAS Conference aims to be a discussion hub in which different stakeholders such as researchers\, decision-makers\, publishers\, librarians\, and institutional service providers can share and compare their take on the current scholarly communication system and their vision for a sustainable future. DESCRIPTION:The Swedish Research Council and SwissCore organise a Science Briefing on ‘Harnessing the power of data to tackle Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)‘\, a pressing global challenge threatening our ability to treat common infections effectively. \nDuring this event\, we are convening a distinguished panel of experts to discuss the One-Health Approach to AMR\, and the critical role of data in combating AMR.
