SUMMARY:Shaping the Future of Cultural Heritage: “Connecting the Cultural Heritage Cloud with the common European data space for cultural heritage and the European Open Science Cloud”
DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Heritage Cloud – or European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) – is a European Union initiative to create a digital infrastructure that will connect cultural heritage researchers and professionals across the EU. It will develop specific digital collaborative tools for the sector while removing barriers for smaller and remote institutions. The goal is to help cultural heritage institutions\, research organisations and other professional organisations of all kinds and sizes to work with their digital objects in a more visible\, interconnected\, harmonised\, and informed way\, to successfully cope with the challenges the digital transition poses to the sector and seize its opportunities. The Cultural Heritage Cloud will add a new digital dimension to cultural heritage preservation\, conservation\, restoration and enhancement by providing cutting-edge technologies\, for instance for the digitization of artefacts or for researching artworks. The implementation of this initiative has now begun with the EU-funded project ECHOES – European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science\, which started on the 1 of June 2024. \nTwo other initiatives are currently running at European level: \n\nfunded by the Digital Europe programme\, the common European data space for cultural heritage is an EU flagship initiative to accelerate the digital transformation of the sector and foster creation\, access and reuse of heritage data.\nThe vision for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is to put in place a system for researchers in Europe to store\, share\, process\, analyse\, and reuse data within and across disciplines and borders.\n\nIn this webinar\, we’ll learn more about the Cloud and two other European initiatives\, and how they are interconnected and complementary\, how these initiatives interact with the Cloud\, and what the added value of such connections is for the cultural heritage community.

SUMMARY:2nd Open Science EARMA Thematic Group Event
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThis event\, presented by the Open Science Thematic Group and sponsored by Digital Science\, will explore Open Science in a global context. Considering the geopolitical landscape and consequent security concerns and regulations\, the event will provide a forum for dialogue on how to negotiate the policy gap(s) between open science and global security\, the issue of ‘dual use’\, and look at tools to assist this process. \nFurther\, the event will look at the impact of Open Science for lower income countries\, and whether the advantages – enhanced access to publications\, increased collaboration – outweigh the costs and work effort required of research communities in these often-under-resourced jurisdictions. It will explore how funder mandates and publishing models can both assist and challenge progress\, and showcase how cross-jurisdictional support can aid progress. \nProgramme Points\nDay 01 of the event aims to address multiple goals\, including identifying key security regulations and recommendations\, enhancing awareness and education for research managers and administrators\, and fostering ongoing dialogue to adapt Open Science principles in the current geopolitical landscape. The session will help participants to: \n\n1. Understand the relevance of the new geopolitical landscape in applying the Open Science principles in research.\n2. Discuss the EU Council’s recommendations for enhancing research security and its intersection with Open Science with an emphasise on the need for awareness and education among research managers\, administrators\, researchers\, and other stakeholders.\n3. Discuss best practices like “as open as possible\, as closed as necessary\,” FAIR principles\, and various funding models with particular knowledge exchange on the federative nature of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).\n4. Explore policy gaps and identify the best compliance tools to ensure robust implementation of Open Science.\n\nDay 02 will explore the advantages of Open Science for lower income countries\, such as enhanced access to publications\, heightened collaboration prospects\, and expanded audiences\, while also providing consideration of whether the expectations placed on researchers and research institutions in these regions to reciprocate these practices might pose disadvantages and potentially prohibitive costs. Specifically the session will look at: \n\n1. Attitudes to open science in different jurisdictions\n2. Transformative agreements\, APCs and the issue and impact of inequity in this system.\n3. Whether the European requirement to use CC-By licences negatively affects important revenue streams.\n4. How cross-jurisdictional supports can be developed and enabled.\n\n  \nRegistration Information\nParticipation is free of charge. Participants do not have to be EARMA members in order to participate. Registration for this event is open until September 09\, 2024\, or until reaches maximum capacity.

SUMMARY:FOAM 2024: FAIR principles for Ontologies and Metadata in Knowledge Management
DESCRIPTION:FOAM is a new workshop merging the Workshop on Ontologies for FAIR and FAIR Ontologies (Onto4FAIR)\, the Conceptual Modeling\, Ontologies and Metadata Management for Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) Data (CMOMM4FAIR) and the FAIR Ontology Harmonization and TRUST Data Interoperability Workshop (FOHTI). \nThe main objectives of this workshop are: \n\nto bring together new methods for enabling FAIR research outputs (data\, software\, workflows\, ontologies\, mappings\, etc.) through ontologies and vocabularies\ndiscuss techniques\, metrics and guidelines to improve the FAIRness of ontologies and vocabularies\nto share experiences\, identify new challenges and opportunities applying FAIR for different communities\n\nFOAM will be an in-person event. \n\n\nTopics of interest\nMaking the resources produced by researchers fully reusable and understandable requires complex efforts. To address these issues\, the Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) principles have been developed to provide guidance on making resources more reusable and interoperable. These principles have gained increasing attention in a number of different domains and applications. On the one hand\, a key aspect is the ability to describe resources correctly and semantically\, in particular using ontologies. On the other hand\, ontologies themselves have to comply with the FAIR principles. \nThe workshop aims to bring together leaders from academia\, industry and user institutions to discuss the adoption of the FAIR principles and share real-world requirements\, challenges and experiences in their respective domains. In addition\, we aim to explore how the FAIR principles are supported by the use of ontologies that are ideally FAIR themselves\, and to discuss the challenges and perspectives in adopting the FAIR principles. \nThe topics of interest include\, but are not limited to\, the following: \n\nontologies\, schemas and vocabularies for FAIR data and metadata;\ndomain and cross-domain ontologies for FAIR research outputs (data\, software\, mappings\, workflows\, ontologies\, ML models\, etc.);\ntechniques\, methods and tools to increase the FAIRness of vocabularies and ontologies;\nFAIR ontology harmonisation\, mapping\, alignment\, merging and modularisation;\nbest practices on modeling FAIR research outputs;\nsemantic descriptions of FAIR digital objects;\nchallenges in FAIR research output management and modeling;\nnovel applications of the FAIR principles\, FAIRification process and use cases;\nmetrics for FAIRness assessment;\nprovenance in FAIR environments;\nFAIR principles and open science;\nFAIR principles and linked open data;\nApplication of the FAIR principles in scientific communities (life science\, digital humanities\, health\, smart cities\, etc.)\n\n\n\nSubmissions\nSubmissions can be made in the following categories: \n\nFull papers (10 – 12 pages\, including references)\nShort papers (6 – 9 pages\, including references)\nPosters (up to 5 pages\, including references)\n\n  \nSubmissions should be original work and follow the CEUR one-column template (Overleaf template\, CEUR author kit). However\, FOAM 2024 explicitly welcomes alternative and enhanced submission formats\, such as HTML submissions. Authors who are preparing such a submission should contact the workshop organizers in advance to make sure we can accommodate for them in the submission and review process. \nSubmissions should be managed through Easychair. At least one author of each accepted paper is expected to attend the workshop (in person). \nFOAM embraces the adoption of FAIR best practices. If your paper proposes a dataset\, has associated source code or proposes a new ontology or demo\, please make sure these resources conform with the FAIR Best practices from FOIS.

SUMMARY:Q&A and matchmaking for call for proposals 'Open Science Infrastructure'
DESCRIPTION:About the event \nThis event will offer participants an opportunity to get information about the call for proposals ‘Open Science Infrastructure’ and to find potential collaborators. \nDuring the first part of the event\, information will be provided about the Open Science NL Open Science Infrastructure call\, and participants will have an opportunity to ask clarifying questions. \nIn the interactive second (optional) part of the event\, participants interested in applying for funding in this call and seeking collaborations will have an opportunity to join a matchmaking session. \nAbout the call \nThe aim of this call for proposals is to fund (digital) infrastructures across the whole spectrum of open science. Proposals can be tailored to specific types of infrastructures (e.g. community-led open access scholarly publishing platforms)\, specific types of research outputs (e.g. research software\, publications\, creative content\, replication studies etc.)\, or specific types of open science practices (e.g. citizen science\, preregistration\, open peer review etc.).  \nAdditionally\, applications can be generic or tailored to the needs of a specific discipline of research. Particularly encouraged are proposals which help to reduce the fragmentation of the existing ecosystem of open science infrastructures\, i.e. promoting integration between existing tools and services. \nCall for proposals: Open Science Infrastructure \nWho should attend? \nAnyone interested in the call for proposals.

SUMMARY:OECD Global Science Forum - ESFRI Workshop on assessing public expenditures committed to RIs
DESCRIPTION:Research infrastructures (RIs) play a critical role in the scientific enterprise. They are now an essential component for all scientific domains and not only allow to push the boundaries of existing knowledge and the production of breakthrough research but they also play a major role in structuring the research system through the development of networks\, of user communities and of rich ecosystems that bring together many research and innovation stakeholders. \nThis increasing role of RIs in the science system\, and the increasing complexity of RIs\, has led to a steady increase in their funding requirement: not only have RIs become a necessity in all scientific disciplines\, but the cost of individual RIs can reach billions or even tens of billion euros. While data is readily available on total research funding in each country\, the same cannot be said for the share of funding specific to RIs. \nThis Workshop\, which is co-organised by the OECD (Global Science Forum) and the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI)\, would be investigating what are the demands from relevant stakeholders regarding RI funding data\, existing data-gathering mechanisms for RI funding and their limits\, what funding could reasonably be assessed and how better standardised RI funding information might be generated. \nYou may read more about the issues to be discussed in this Workshop and the provisional agenda on the dedicated Workshop webpage. \nThis workshop will be virtual only (Zoom). Participants need to register using this link. \n\nYou may contact info@str-esfri.eu for any questions.

SUMMARY:Skills4EOSC Minimum Viable Skills Profiles: Implementation using FAIR Signposting
DESCRIPTION:The “Minimum Viable Skills Profiles: Implementation using FAIR Signposting”  will take place on 2nd July 2024 from 15:00-16:00 CEST. Registration for the workshop is free but mandatory. \nThe Catalogue of Minimum Viable Skillset (MVS) Profiles describes key skills and competences for roles that enable researchers\, professionals\, and stakeholders to practice Open Science (OS) with the support of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Each MVS Profile relates the essential skills to the Open Science (OS) practices\, activities\, and outcomes that may typically be expected of the role concerned. \nOne of the ways to ensure increased FAIRness of the MVS Catalogue has been to follow the recommendations on implementing FAIR Signposting\, a lightweight yet powerful approach to increase the FAIRness of scholarly objects. The main idea of the approach is to optimise the MVS Catalogue landing page for use by machine agents that navigate the scholarly web and describe the metadata related to the profiles in a standards-based way. In this way machines learn about the persistent identifier of the MVS Catalogue\, where and what its content is\, where metadata that describes it is\, etc. \nThis webinar aims to provide an overview of the Catalogue of MVS profiles developed within Skills4EOSC\, and how the project implemented the FAIR Signposting approach developed by FAIR IMPACT so that they can be more easily read and understood by automated agents. The workshop is a great venue to discuss and think about how one can take a similar approach to take advantage of the MVS profiles and/or describe and make available other types of work and materials. This event is organised in conjunction with the Skills4EOSC project \nDraft agenda: \n\n15:00 – 15:05 Welcome\n15:05 – 15:15 Introduction to the MVS profiles\n15:15 – 15:30 FAIR Signposting\n15:30 – 15:45 Implementation of a FAIR MVS Catalogue\n15:45 – 16:00 Q&A and wrap up
