SUMMARY:A mapping of RDM strategies across Canadian higher education
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore the institutional strategies published by Canadian higher education and research institutions to address the increasingly critical demands of research data management (RDM) in accordance with the Tri-Agency RDM Policy. A focused subgroup comprising representatives from the Tri-Agencies\, the University of Ottawa\, and The Alliance expert groups has undertaken a comprehensive analysis of these strategies to provide insights into how institutions are addressing the RDM needs. \nFindings will be presented on how institutions are planning to provide support for RDM best practices. This support includes raising RDM awareness\, providing training\, infrastructure\, and consultation for researchers to develop data management plans (DMPs)\, deposit data\, and work with Indigenous data. This session offers a valuable opportunity for administrators and practitioners to engage with ongoing efforts to enhance research data management in Canadian higher education and to contribute to the advancement of RDM practices across the sector.

SUMMARY:8th seminar in the "Opening science: Practice and perspectives" series
DESCRIPTION:The 8th seminar in the series “Opening science: Practice and perspectives” in 2024 is organised by the Lublin University Association in partnership with Elsevier. In less than a decade since the first seminar\, which took place in 2016 in Krakow\, we have been observing dynamic changes in Poland regarding broadly understood openness in science. \nIn this process of change\, academic libraries\, university presses\, research support and funding institutions\, and academics themselves play an active role. All of these entities work towards the overarching goal of achieving scientific excellence. \nPrevious seminars discussed the challenges facing the academic community in the context of open science. This year’s seminar will focus on strategies for both development and stabilisation of activities already underway. It will also consider strategies for recovery\, which are reflected in newly emerging and updated open access policies. \nThe detailed topics that will be discussed at the seminar include: \n\nStrategies for increasing engagement of the academic community and shaping a culture of open science:\n\npractical ways of implementing the assumptions of open science\, research data management\,\nin particular the security of research data and their long-term archiving.\n\n\nStrategy for building capacity and human capital in open science:\n\nthe search for ambassadors and data stewards and their role in the academic environment\,\ncompetencies and requirements of new specialties: data librarian and data steward.\n\n\nStrategy for the development of open science in Poland in the context of international activities:\n\npolicies and procedures\,\ninternational initiatives in the area of open science.\n\n\nEmbedding artificial intelligence (AI) development strategies in open science activities.\n\nIncluded in the seminar fee: \n\nparticipation in seminars and workshops\,\ncoffee service and lunch\,\nattending dinner.

SUMMARY:EOSC Coffee Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Since the three EOSC Coffee Lectures in the first quarter of 2024\, EOSC has made significant strides in its development. It is particularly worth mentioning that the productive version of the EOSC EU Node will be presented to the EOSC community during the EOSC Symposium in Berlin. This means that the basic functionalities of the EOSC EU Node are now available\, which is the prerequisite for other national\, regional or thematic infrastructures to be able to connect to it. The goal of a fully operational EOSC Federation is now within reach. \nThis 30-minute Coffee Lecture titled “Die EOSC ist Online! Was heißt das und wie geht es weiter?” will focus specifically on the EOSC EU Node and the next steps for selecting infrastructures\, services and data that will be connected to the EOSC EU Node in the first wave. A 30-minute Q&A will follow. \nThe webinar will be held in German.

SUMMARY:Slovak Open Science Forum
DESCRIPTION:The conference brings the latest information in different areas of open science\, including open access to research data\, research data management\, research assessment and citizen science. \nThe information is aimed at the scientific and academic community\, academic libraries\, as well as students and the public. \nThe conference is held in English\, and the presenters are mostly international experts in the field of open science. \nProgramme \n9:30 -10:00     Registration \n10:00 – 10:10  Welcome \n10:10 – 10:35  Johan Rooryck (cOAlition S\, BE) – cOAlition S: the road ahead \nIn this presentation\, we will discuss the current activities and future plans of cOAlition S in moving to a scholarly communication system that enables rapid\, open\, transparent\, and equitable sharing of trustworthy scientific knowledge. \n10:35 – 11:05  Laetitia Bracco (l’Université de Lorraine\, FR) – French Open Science Monitoring \nSince 2018\, France has a National Open Science Plan meant to impulse and develop the opening of all scientific outputs: publications\, data\, software\, clinical trials… Since 2019\, the French Open Science Monitor (FOSM) tries to capture the efficiency of this public policy through different indicators. This paper will present the latest version of the FOSM\, which focuses on research data and software. \n11:05 – 11:35  Sándor Soós (Hungarian Academy of Sciences\, HU) – Bibliometrics as a key to Open Access Publishing – but not the way you think of it \nOpen science and open access publishing has brought about a great deal of optimism regarding a new paradigm of bibliometrics. The majority of expectations have been directed towards new metrics based on the open access publishing culture\, which have been hoped to enhance the validity of research assessment. This presentation will illustrate a number of instances\, based on current research\, where the utilisation of bibliometric methodology helps to dispel myths or\, at the very least\, to elucidate common misperceptions surrounding OA publishing. One typical example is the relationship between OA and the notion of ‚questionable journals‘\, which has its roots in the perceptions of the research community facing the growing complexities of the publication industry. \n11:35 – 11:50  Coffee Break \n11:50 – 12:30  Matej Antol (MUNI\, EOSC CZ) – Towards the Development of the Czech Data Infrastructure for FAIR Research Data \nEOSC CZ is a Czech national initiative dedicated to advancing best practices in research data management across scientific communities. In the core of the initiative is the development of the National Data Infrastructure (NDI) – a platform for managing\, sharing\, and accessing FAIR research data. Together with the national e-infrastructure e-INFRA CZ\, it creates a comprehensive environment that fosters responsible science and enhances the competitiveness of Czech research in the digital age. \n12:30 – 13:00 Rita Pinhasi (KEMÖ consortium\, AT) – Open access publishing in Austria \n13:00 – 14:00  Lunch \n14:00 – 14:30  Maria Kadlec Markova (SpringerNature\, CZ) – Accelerating open science with tools not rules \nAlthough researchers are increasingly opening up their papers\, peer reviews\, data\, protocols\, code and other research outputs\, progress towards a world in which scientific knowledge is as open as it can be\, has been slow.  In this talk\, I’ll look at some of the key milestones on the long road to open science and I’ll describe how tools rather than rules are helping researchers improve the transparency\, reproducibility\, and integrity of their research. \n14:30 – 15:00  TBA (SK) – Citizen Science in Slovakia

SUMMARY:DeiC Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:The conference is the annual event for everyone interested in e-infrastructure in Danish research. Here you can gain new knowledge and professional input in areas such as Data Management\, HPC\, Security\, Network & Services\, and Quantum Computing. The DeiC Conference is also the place to nurture and develop your professional network. \nBy registering before August 30\, you can get your ticket at the early bird price. Read more and register here. \nCollaboration at the Center\nThe theme of this year’s conference is “Collaboration on digital research infrastructure for a better tomorrow\,” and for the first time\, the conference program will be organized around cross-disciplinary topics rather than specific fields. Program committee member Hannah Mihai explains: \n“This year\, we have worked to reflect the significant overlap between our fields in the structure of our conference program. None of our fields stand entirely alone\, and we need each other’s expertise. A good example is DeiC’s involvement in various projects concerning measurements on fiber cables\, where the cables are owned by the Research Network\, data is processed in HPC computing centers under strict security requirements as they can potentially be sensitive\, and the data is stored in accordance with good and FAIR Data Management principles.” Hannah Mihai\, Data Management Consultant\, DeiC. \nThe program committee is currently working hard to put together this year’s exciting program\, and they look forward to presenting the first names in the upcoming DeiC newsletter. \nNew Social Activities\nThe opportunity to meet with old and new acquaintances is a central part of the conference for the participants. To support this even more\, the program committee is planning a series of social activities this year\, where participants can interact in informal settings. Keep an eye on DeiC’s upcoming newsletters and our website for more details.

SUMMARY:Strengthening the policy of openness in science at the University of Warsaw
DESCRIPTION:In modern scientific communication\, the sharing of research results and data is increasingly based on principles of openness\, verifiability\, and replicability. Although the movement toward widespread and open access to knowledge is growing\, it has not yet become the standard. The equitable distribution of knowledge and universal participation in it play a crucial role in the development and democratisation of societies. However\, despite technological advancements\, significant barriers to free access to knowledge remain. \nThe launch of two new repositories at the University of Warsaw\, aimed at facilitating the sharing of scientific achievements and access to research data\, prompts the university to consider how best to promote access to science. What is necessary to achieve this? Is it solely about technological and legislative solutions? How should the rules of access to knowledge be regulated? What practices are already in place in Poland and worldwide? \nThe University of Warsaw’s participation in the 4EU+ Alliance offers a unique opportunity to compare and learn from European universities that are more advanced in the realm of open science. This collaboration fosters the integration into the international scientific community\, which undoubtedly enhances the quality of science and education at the University of Warsaw and elevates its prestige. \nPresentations by representatives from partner universities in Germany\, France\, Italy\, the Czech Republic\, and Denmark will showcase European best practices and innovative solutions. Additionally\, speakers from Poland will discuss specific initiatives at Warsaw’s universities and broader issues related to the dissemination of science that concern researchers nationwide. \nThe organisers hope that the presentations and discussions will provide a comprehensive view of openness in Polish science and that the conference will contribute to the development of this idea among researchers\, PhD candidates\, students\, and all others interested in scientific achievements. \nParticipation in the conference is free of charge. \nPlease note: the number of places is limited. The order of registration is decisive. \nIf you have any questions or problems registering\, please contact the organising team at repozytorium.buw@uw.edu.pl.

SUMMARY:Seminarium Open Accesss
DESCRIPTION:For the fifteenth time\, the University of Lodz is organising the Open Access Seminar as part of the International Open Science Week. For over a dozen years\, we have been inviting the academic community to discuss topics that are key to the development of the idea of open science in Poland\, and in 2024 we have identified the place of open science in the evaluation and assessment of scientific activities as such a topic. Therefore\, we are organising a discussion panel at the University of Lodz Library with the participation of experts who will share various experiences and perspectives with us – and with each other. We want to discuss topics such as: (absence) of open science in evaluation\, non-bibliometric aspects of the evaluation of scientific activities\, the specificity of the discipline and evaluation criteria\, initiatives to improve the science evaluation system (especially the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment: CoARA)\, possible directions of development of the Polish system for assessing science and scientists. \nWe hope that the debate initiated as part of the Seminar will become a field for exchanging views and will familiarise the academic community with the assumptions and postulates of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment\, which the University of Lodz joined in 2022. \nThis year’s edition of Open Access Week will be held on October 21-27\, 2024\, under the slogan “Community over Commercialisation” – a continuation of last year’s edition. \nContact the organisers: openaccess@lib.uni.lodz.pl

SUMMARY:International Open Access Week
DESCRIPTION:The theme of International Open Access Week for 2024 will continue with last year’s focus on “Community over Commercialization.” This theme contributed to a growing recognition of the need to prioritize approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community. Taking the unprecedented step to build on this theme for a second year highlights the importance of this conversation and presents the opportunity to turn more of these deliberations into collective action. \nThe many questions surfaced by the theme last year are even more pressing in 2024 given recent developments\, such as the rush to integrate artificial intelligence into commercial academic systems without community consultation. Ongoing critical questions include: What are the consequences when a small number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves? What are the hidden costs of business models that entrench extreme levels of profit while exacerbating inequity? When does the opaque collection and use of personal data by commercial platforms begin to undermine academic freedom? When and in what ways can commercialization align with the public interest? What community-governed infrastructures already exist that better serve the interests of the research community and the public (such as preprint servers\, repositories\, and open publishing platforms)? How can we shift the default toward using these community-minded options? \nCommunities are encouraged to adapt the theme to their local context and add to it to highlight specific conversations they wish to focus on. Examples might include “Community over Commercialization: What is Community Governance & Why Does it Matter\,” “Community over Commercialization: Reclaiming Academic Autonomy\,” or “Community over Commercialization: Centering Equity in Knowledge Production.” Customizable graphics templates are available for the community to promote these locally adapted themes. \nOpen Access Week 2024 will be held from October 21st through the 27th; however\, anyone is encouraged to host discussions and take action whenever is most suitable during the year. For more information about International Open Access Week\, please visit openaccessweek.org. The official hashtag for the week is #OAWeek. \nTranslations of this announcement in other languages can be found at openaccessweek.org. Graphics for this year’s Open Access Week theme are available at openaccessweek.org.
