SUMMARY:BERD Academy: Open Education for Research with Business\, Economics and Related Data
DESCRIPTION:Big Data took the world by storm\, Artificial Intelligence has become a hot topic across research disciplines. Working with these data can be a challenge. Especially for researchers in Business\, Economics and Social Sciences\, who graduated just a few years ago when most study programs covered mainly or exclusively ‘traditional’ data collection methods such as surveys with structured\, tabular data. \nTo unlock the research potential of new data sources by applying fitting methods\, education is needed. The BERD Academy is the training outlet of the consortium for Business\, Economics\, and Related Data in the National Research Data Infrastructure (BERD@NFDI). In this talk\, we will present how a wide range of offers in flexible formats fulfills the needs of researchers and research data providers. We want to discuss\, how educational content can unlock research potential and how open education can foster open science.

SUMMARY:EOSC EU node: Information and demonstration
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Guido Aben from The Swedish Research Council/Sunet explains what the EOSC EU node is and who it is for. Angeliki Adamaki from Lund University demonstrates how she has tested the EOSC EU node in her research. \nThe webinar is aimed at researchers and those interested in what the EOSC EU node can be used for. The webinar is organized by SUHF and the Swedish Research Council. The last date for registration is 23 January. \nSpeakers\nAngeliki Adamaki is a project manager at Lund University\, working on European Projects with particular interest in Open Science practices\, FAIR data management and interdisciplinary research. She currently chairs the Open Science Champions group at LU. \nGuido Aben is a senior strategy officer at SUNET\, the Swedish NREN. He’s well-known in the eInfrastructures landscape and has previously had roles at AARNet and SURF. \nOrganisers\nThe Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) is tasked by the Government with coordinating and promoting Swedish involvement in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). We are also Sweden’s mandated organisation in the EOSC association\, where we represent the interests of the Swedish research community\, among other things. We have started the online forum EOSC Sverige/Sweden to provide space for a broad national discussion on EOSC\, where we welcome all reflections and discussions about your experiences with EOSC and the EU node. \nThe Swedish Research Council is also active in the technical development of EOSC through Sunet and Nordunet. \nSUHF (The Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions) is a national association of higher education institutions in Sweden. Within SUHF\, there is a coordination group for open science that supports the HEIs in developing their work with open science. EOSC can be an important part of the development of open science in the future and SUHF follows and supports this development. SUHF is working with the Swedish Research Council to develop Sweden’s work with EOSC.

SUMMARY:Shaping resilient futures: Open science and data policies for crisis preparedness\, response\, and recovery
DESCRIPTION:The escalating frequency and severity of health emergencies\, natural hazards\, disasters\, and geopolitical crises underscore the critical need for evidence-based approaches to preparedness\, response\, and recovery. These crises have far-reaching humanitarian impacts\, disrupting lives and livelihoods worldwide and necessitating coordinated\, timely interventions across local\, national\, regional\, and global levels. In response\, UNESCO has partnered with the Committee on Data (CODATA) of the International Science Council (ISC) to explore how the principles of open science\, as articulated in the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, can inform the development of effective policies for data collection\, analysis\, and sharing during crises. This initiative aligns with existing international frameworks and policies\, emphasizing the role of open science in fostering resilient and informed responses. \nAs part of this effort\, the UNESCO-CODATA Data Policies for Times of Crisis Facilitated by Open Science (DPTC) project has produced practical resources\, including a factsheet\, a guidance document\, and a checklist. These tools\, integrated into the UNESCO Open Science Toolkit\, are designed to facilitate the implementation of the UNESCO Open Science Recommendation and empower stakeholders to adopt robust data practices for crisis management. This webinar will present key findings from UNESCO’s global consultation on crisis data policies and showcase the resources developed to support open\, transparent\, and reliable data governance in times of crisis.

SUMMARY:A mapping of RDM strategies across Canadian higher education
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore the institutional strategies published by Canadian higher education and research institutions to address the increasingly critical demands of research data management (RDM) in accordance with the Tri-Agency RDM Policy. A focused subgroup comprising representatives from the Tri-Agencies\, the University of Ottawa\, and The Alliance expert groups has undertaken a comprehensive analysis of these strategies to provide insights into how institutions are addressing the RDM needs. \nFindings will be presented on how institutions are planning to provide support for RDM best practices. This support includes raising RDM awareness\, providing training\, infrastructure\, and consultation for researchers to develop data management plans (DMPs)\, deposit data\, and work with Indigenous data. This session offers a valuable opportunity for administrators and practitioners to engage with ongoing efforts to enhance research data management in Canadian higher education and to contribute to the advancement of RDM practices across the sector.

SUMMARY:DSA Art 40 Delegated Act – Info webinar for researchers
DESCRIPTION:Under article 40 of the Digital Services Act (DSA)\, vetted researchers will be able to request data from very large online platforms (VLOPs) and search engines (VLOSEs) to conduct research on systemic risks in the EU. \nA draft delegated act clarifies the procedures leading to the sharing of data by VLOPs and VLOSEs with vetted researchers. It also specifies conditions for providing such data and establishes a DSA data access portal to serve as a one-stop-shop for researchers\, data providers and Digital Services Coordinators (DSCs). \nThe delegated act has been published for consultation\, and you can provide feedback here until 26 November. \nThe European Commission is hosting an info webinar\, targeted at researchers who would like to learn more about the delegated act and how it might benefit their research.  It will take place on 19 November\, 10:00-11:30.

SUMMARY:2nd OSCARS open call for open science projects
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to the launch event of the 2nd OSCARS open call for open science projects and services\, to be held online\, on Friday\, 15 November 2024\, from 11:00 to 12:30 CET. \nThis is the last of the two calls (total worth ~16 million EUR) foreseen in the frame of the OSCARS project to support research communities from any scientific domain to take up open science and foster the involvement of scientists in EOSC. \nThe 1st OSCARS Open Call concluded in July resulting in a total of 58 projects being selected for funding (read more). Some of them will be presented during the event. \nResearchers from all scientific disciplines are welcome to apply to the 2nd OSCARS Open Call before January 15th\, 2025\, with proposals for the development of Open Science projects or services\, that together will drive the uptake of FAIR-data-intensive research throughout the European Research Area (ERA). \nProjects are funded with a lump sum between 100\,000 EUR and 250\,000 EUR\, and can be proposed in the fields of any of the Science Clusters and beyond\, by any researcher or group of researchers. \nBy the end of OSCARS\, it is expected that a series of valuable scientific results and services will be available\, leading to an increased uptake of Open Science by researchers and to promote cross-border and cross-domain cooperation in the long run. \nDuring the event\, participants will learn more about the scope and content of the call\, and will be welcome to raise any question about the call and the application process. \nWhy attend? \n\nTo learn about OSCARS and the opportunity given by the 2nd OSCARS Open Call for Open Science projects and services.\nTo ask any question about the call\, and get useful answers to increase the chances of submitting a successful proposal.\n\nWho should attend? \n\nResearchers from all scientific disciplines\nData scientists\nMembers of research infrastructures
