SUMMARY:Teaching what we practice – Open Science in higher education
DESCRIPTION:Teaching what we practice means emphasising the importance of integrating Open Science principles into academic teaching. The relevance of these practices lies in fostering a learning environment that mirrors the evolving landscape of scientific research. By embracing Open Science in higher education\, instructors can teach students not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills in transparent\, accessible\, and reproducible research. This approach includes employing open science practices such as filling out a pre-registration form\, making students aware that sharing materials and data is helpful\, and highlighting the importance of replications. \nAs higher education institutions increasingly adopt these practices\, they prepare students for a future where open and collaborative research is the norm\, bridging the gap between academic training and real-world scientific practices. Lastly\, current students seem to be open to open science practices anyways – creating a winning setting.

SUMMARY:Tools and Services to improve the quality of Research Software
DESCRIPTION:EVERSE is running an interactive online workshop which aims to examine which tools and services researchers use to improve the quality of research software\, and how they use them. The workshop is titled “Evaluating Tools and Services to improve the quality of research software” and will take place on Monday 10 February 2025 between 10:00 and 16:00 CET. \nThe workshop is open to those who work with or develop research software and want to uphold high-quality standards regarding FAIRness\, sustainability\, portability\, testing\, security\, etc. Both non-EVERSE and EVERSE members are welcome. Members belonging to any of the 5 EOSC Science Clusters are also encouraged to take part. \nThe workshop will provide opportunities for knowledge exchange and discussion on relevant tools used to improve the quality of research software. SUMMARY:International Love Data Week
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 theme is “Whose Data Is It\, Anyway?” Take a minute to think about who owns data compared to who uses data. Different groups – like researchers\, the government\, companies\, or organisations – may collect data. They could own it\, share it\, publish it online\, or combine it. This year’s Love Data Week wants us to ask ‘Whose Data is it Anyway?’ This helps us remember to think about where the data came from before using it. Use this theme to have fun with your audience using data games or game shows. You could also use it to help people learn more about data literacy. Or you could talk about being responsible when dealing with important issues involving data. We’ve created a ready-to-use social media post. Simply download (or right-click) the square image and use it along with the text below to share this year’s event with your community on any social media platform. \nSave the date! Love Data Week is February 10-14\, 2025. Sign up for email updates. \nEvents and activities\nThe 2025 events are being planned and will be posted closer to the start of Love Data Week. Want to see what events were held last year? View all 2024 Love Data Week events and activities that happened locally and virtually around the world. \nIdeas for Activities\n\nData citation\nFact-checking and accounting for misuse of data\nFinding data sources\nTransparency of AI\nData governance and management\nData sovereignty\, such as Indigenous data\nPros/cons of sharing data\nCopyright and other intellectual property associated with data\n\nLooking for a listing of ICPSR-specific Love Data Week events or the popular “Adopt-a-Dataset” activity? Visit the Love Data Week with ICPSR page. \nSubmit an event listing\nAre you hosting an event or activity for Love Data Week 2025?  Look for the link in early 2025 to submit your information to be included in the official Love Data Week events and activities list. SUMMARY:Skills4EOSC Workshop: Science4Policy – Bridging the gap between research and decision-making
DESCRIPTION:What\n\nCommunicating science effectively is becoming increasingly crucial in empowering society to take evidence-informed decisions to address its challenges\, especially in the context of evidence-informed policymaking (often referred to as “science4policy”). \nThe SKILLS4EOSC two-day interactive workshop aims to enhance researchers’ communication skills and facilitate dialogue with policymakers by upskilling communication competencies through theoretical learning and practical application. \n\nWho\n\nAre you a scientist\, communicator or policy enthusiast and want to bridge the gap between research and decision-making? Join this interactive workshop to improve your skills in science communication in the context of policy making!\nThe ideal participants are researchers – in any field – wishing to improve their ability to interact with policy makers. They can be already involved in science4policy activities or simply motivated to start a journey into this new realm. In the registration form they should provide their motivation and experience in the field.

SUMMARY:BERD Academy: Open Education for Research with Business\, Economics and Related Data
DESCRIPTION:Big Data took the world by storm\, Artificial Intelligence has become a hot topic across research disciplines. Working with these data can be a challenge. Especially for researchers in Business\, Economics and Social Sciences\, who graduated just a few years ago when most study programs covered mainly or exclusively ‘traditional’ data collection methods such as surveys with structured\, tabular data. \nTo unlock the research potential of new data sources by applying fitting methods\, education is needed. The BERD Academy is the training outlet of the consortium for Business\, Economics\, and Related Data in the National Research Data Infrastructure (BERD@NFDI). In this talk\, we will present how a wide range of offers in flexible formats fulfills the needs of researchers and research data providers. We want to discuss\, how educational content can unlock research potential and how open education can foster open science.

SUMMARY:Shaping resilient futures: Open science and data policies for crisis preparedness\, response\, and recovery
DESCRIPTION:The escalating frequency and severity of health emergencies\, natural hazards\, disasters\, and geopolitical crises underscore the critical need for evidence-based approaches to preparedness\, response\, and recovery. These crises have far-reaching humanitarian impacts\, disrupting lives and livelihoods worldwide and necessitating coordinated\, timely interventions across local\, national\, regional\, and global levels. In response\, UNESCO has partnered with the Committee on Data (CODATA) of the International Science Council (ISC) to explore how the principles of open science\, as articulated in the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, can inform the development of effective policies for data collection\, analysis\, and sharing during crises. This initiative aligns with existing international frameworks and policies\, emphasizing the role of open science in fostering resilient and informed responses. \nAs part of this effort\, the UNESCO-CODATA Data Policies for Times of Crisis Facilitated by Open Science (DPTC) project has produced practical resources\, including a factsheet\, a guidance document\, and a checklist. These tools\, integrated into the UNESCO Open Science Toolkit\, are designed to facilitate the implementation of the UNESCO Open Science Recommendation and empower stakeholders to adopt robust data practices for crisis management. This webinar will present key findings from UNESCO’s global consultation on crisis data policies and showcase the resources developed to support open\, transparent\, and reliable data governance in times of crisis.
