SUMMARY:Shaping the Future of Open Science in Flanders: Insights\, Achievements\, and Aspirations
DESCRIPTION:The Network Day 2025 will be held on 22 May 2025 in Brussels\, at the Herman Teirlinck Building on the Tour & Taxis site. \nThe Network Day will bring together members of the FRDN network to exchange their knowledge and experiences. With the completion of the first Open Science Policy Plan\, this event is the perfect opportunity to highlight the network’s key achievements and showcase inspiring practices and policy implementations from individual Flemish research institutions over the past five years\, made possible through FOSB funding. \nWe will also look to the future of Open Science in Flanders\, exploring the upcoming Flemish policy plan and international trends. In addition\, international examples surrounding critical issues in Open Science will provide inspiration and stimulate discussion on the areas we want to focus on in the coming years. \nWe invite researchers\, data stewards\, policy makers\, funders\, project managers\, IT and technical staff\, legal officers and other stakeholders involved or interested in Open Science to participate and to share experiences and knowledge. \nCall for contributions\nWe invite all FRDN network members to showcase Open Science achievements from their institution accomplished during the past policy period. These can be small or large\, ranging from in-house information sessions you have organized\, course materials you have written\, collaborations with external partners you have initiated\, to data infrastructures you have set up. We welcome any achievement you would like to share with our network of Open Science enthusiasts. \nWe offer two presentation formats: \nA 5-minute oral presentation in ‘PechaKucha’ format. This means 15 visual slides\, whereby each slide progresses automatically after 20 seconds.\nA poster to be presented during lunch and the break times\, with the opportunity for further explanation by the presenter. \nYou are welcome to contribute one or both types of presentation! \nContributions can be sent to FRDN@fwo.be. The deadline to submit contributions is Friday the 24th of January 2025. \nPlease provide the following information: \n– Title and author(s)\n– Institution(s)\n– Type: poster and/or PechaKucha presentation\n– Abstract: 250 words max \nFor the PechaKucha presentation\, we ask staff from the same institution to collaborate as much as possible by submitting a single presentation. However\, this is a suggestion and not a strict rule. Therefore\, if you prefer to give two (max three) separate presentations to highlight different achievements (within the same institution)\, this is allowed. In case of many submissions and time constraints\, we will contact submitting authors from the same institution shortly after the deadline. \nPreliminary program \n9.00 – 9.30 Register & coffee\n9.30 – 10.30 Welcome with FRDN highlights\n10.30 – 11.00 Institutions showcase\n11.00 – 11.20 Break\n11.20 – 11.50 Institutions showcase\n11.50 – 12.20 Future vision\n12.20 – 13.15 Lunch with posters\n13.15 – 14.45 International inspiration\n14.45 – 15.00 Break\n15.00 – 16.00 Interactive discussions in smaller groups\n16.00 – 16.30 Groups report back\n16.30 Reception \nRegistrations\nRegistrations will open on the 18th of March 2025.

SUMMARY:Let’s talk about science reform
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade the science system has been going through some fundamental changes and even something of a structural reformation. Spearheaded primarily by groups of biomedical scientists\, psychologists and economists\, a reform movement pushing for more openness and verifiability in science has been underway: the Open Science Movement. This movement first started to gain momentum when claims about a credibility crisis were made. Failures of large-scale replication attempts\, seeking to test key studies in some (sub-)disciplines\, worsened initial fears and were quickly treated as proof that fundamental problems did in fact exist and a crisis was indeed unfolding. As a result\, the narrative of a broken science or science in crisis was quickly adopted and promoted across the boundaries of these disciplines. Trans-disciplinary communities began to form\, pushing for systematic interventions to improve the science system overall and to remedy perceived issues of wide-spread irreproducibility as well as a general opacity in science. \nWhile Open Science reforms have garnered quite a bit of positive attention from researchers\, the media\, funders\, and policymakers alike\, they have also received some fundamental criticism over the years. Critics have\, for instance\, pointed to a rather narrow understanding of what constitutes ‘good’ science and how this produces new mechanisms of exclusion rather than inclusion. Similarly\, critics have questioned if the implementations of Open Science measures have in fact benefitted all stakeholders of the global science system as promised. In addition to issues with the assumed universal virtue of Open Science\, critical voices have pointed towards an often abrasive discourse culture associated with the Open Science movement (see “brOpen Science” and “the tone debate”). Hence\, Open Science principles\, their implementations\, and those communities promoting them\, have themselves become the objects of critical scientific inquiry in recent years. \nTo explore these critical debates around Open Science and science reform\, we are bringing together leading scholars who contributed to these debates as part of a one-day in-person workshop in Berlin. Each of our invited speakers will briefly present their own research on the varying aspects of the Open Science reform movement and elaborate on how they theoretically and/or methodologically address the issues they sought to investigate. \nTo start off the workshop\, Sheena F. Bartscherer will present her ongoing investigations into the value systems and narratives underlying the Open Science movement. In her talk\, she will explore the self-perception and public communication of reformers’ activism\, highlighting international replication initiatives and their surrounding community. \nSven Ulpts will proceed with a talk on agreements and discrepancies between researchers’ perspectives and the ideals promoted by Open Science reformers on issues like the practice and role of preregistration\, replication as well as reproducibility. Hence\, in his talk he will explore how current notions of Open Science reform relate to the actual realities and aims of researchers\, who are supposed to live by the standards proposed or even demanded by reformers. \nThis will be followed by Fernanda Beigel who will highlight the social and technical conditions underlying the advancements\, controversies and resistances to Open Science reform in the social sciences and humanities. In particular\, she will compare the ideals of Openness as propagated by current reform movements with implemented forms of Openness in Latin America and the historical conditions as well as developments that such local (indigenous) forms of Openness are contingent on. \nStefanie Haustein will explore the publishing side of Open Science in her talk\, discussing her research on the financial dimensions underlying the actual implementation of Open Science. In particular\, she will speak on open access models and how large academic publishers are able to make an even larger profit with new formats such as APCs. \nAfterwards\, Bart Penders will talk about how current science reform relates to the War on Science. Based on theories of politics of quantification\, he will explore how the Open Science reform movement elevates specific epistemologies to be the guiding principle for all of science and how the roles of statistics\, fraud\, reliability and retractions are used and sometimes even weaponized. \nLastly\, David Peterson will conclude the round of talks by presenting his work on theoretically approaching Metascience as a social movement\, reflecting on how this conceptualization of the Metascience community behind the Open Science reform has been taken up by other researchers  since\, to characterize and investigate Open Science reform. \nWe will wrap up the workshop with an open panel discussion involving all six speakers\, encouraging the audience to participate in a communal discussion and reflection of the day’s proceedings. We intend to find topics as well as perspectives that we – as researchers interested in researching science reform – still need to address. \nThe aim of this event is to provide a forum for the critical reflection of theoretical and methodological approaches to investigate modern science reform and Open Science more specifically. We invite scholars interested in the social and epistemic dimensions of Open Science as well as those curious about studying science reform more broadly\, to attend this workshop. Everyone\, whether critical or enthusiastic about Open Science\, is invited and welcome to join! \nFor registration please send an email directly to Sven Ulpts via: su@ps.au.dk \nDeadline for registrations is Sunday\, April 20th 2025.

SUMMARY:Science as a shared journey: Engaging communities\, building trust\, and advancing Open Science for the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:The right to participate in and benefit from science remains fundamental to human progress and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Open Science is collaborative and inclusive\, allows new social actors to engage in scientific processes\, contributes to the democratization of knowledge\, upholds scientific integrity and addresses systemic inequalities and enclosures of knowledge. Open Science\, with its focus on participatory methods and citizen science initiatives\, is integral to supporting SDG localization. Through examples like community-led environmental monitoring and crowd-sourced health data collection\, citizen science\, an integral component of Open Science\, has demonstrated the power of inclusive knowledge creation. Science cannot function as a public good if the public cannot engage with it. \nBuilding momentum toward the 4th Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference\, this side event will convene diverse stakeholders – researchers\, librarians\, publishers and citizen science initiatives – to discuss the mechanisms through which public contributions and permanent access to scientific discoveries and innovations can strengthen public trust in scientific and knowledge organizations. This dialogue aims to produce actionable recommendations for scientific institutions to meaningfully engage diverse publics in knowledge creation and validation processes. These actionable recommendations will be brought forward both in the United Nations High-level Political Forum in July 2025 and in the roundtable discussion during the 4th Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference in October 2025\, creating pathways for institutional change

SUMMARY:Meet the SoftWare Hash Identifier: Do one thing and do it well
DESCRIPTION:The “Meet the SoftWare Hash Identifier: Do one thing and do it well” webinar will take place on Tuesday April 29th\, from 14:00-16:00 CEST. Registration for the workshop is free but mandatory. \nSoftware identification is essential to ensure long-term traceability of scholarly outputs but as often\, when it comes to software\, things are not as easy as they seem. Research software identification looks like an investigation and calls for tailored solutions. The SoftWare Hash Identifier (SWHID)\, which is under an ISO standardisation process\, provides actionable solutions to the end-users as well as to the repositories managers\, metadata curators\, etc. \nMorane Gruenpeter\, Head of Open Science at Software Heritage\, will share with the audience key insights about research software identification: What is at stake? What is the added value of the SWHID? How does the SWHID articulate with other types of identifiers? The session aims at supporting the supporters\, to prepare them to address the most frequent questions. Last but not least\, the audience will be invited to go beyond the technical aspects and to reflect about criteria of trust. The session is designed to be collaborative. Sabrina Granger\, Open Science Community Manager at Software Heritage\, will facilitate the participants’ journey. \nThis workshop is open to all but intended for those working as data/research stewards\, research software engineers\, data repositories\, and data service providers. Basic knowledge of persistent identifiers is desired.

SUMMARY:Promoting Open Science at universities
DESCRIPTION:Open Science – just the next buzz word or a remarkable development? Open Science (OS) seems to pop up here and there\, often in embellished contexts that suggest a tendency towards arbitrariness. However\, if one looks at the development of the policies of funding agencies\, e.g.\, for the framework programs of the European Commission\, the increase in mandatory deliverables assigned to OS shows a certain relevance of the movement. As a member of the Arqus European University Alliance\, the University of Graz is committed to promoting OS and to coordinating efforts to improve openness within and outside the Alliance. The Arqus Open Science Ambassador Network is dedicated to sharing best practices\, supporting students and researchers in OS practice and leveraging synergies between member universities to advocate for OS. The point is not to fall into ideology\, but to become aware of opportunities and risks by critically reflecting on areas of tension. \nHildrun Walteris researcher in science communication at the University of Graz since 2019. Her research focuses on the evaluation of science communication strategies and formats. She is interested in how open science practices and participatory approaches in research can influence the societal perception of science.

SUMMARY:PLOS and SciLifeLab webinar: Navigating Open Science policies
DESCRIPTION:Open Science policies are rapidly evolving\, but many researchers find them to be vague and difficult to navigate. These policies often lack clear\, actionable guidelines for how researchers can respond to requirements while ensuring they meet research community\, national\, and international standards. The webinar Navigating Open Science policies: Practical guidance for researchers on sharing data and software will briefly summarise the current landscape of selected open science policies. Through real-world examples from PLOS and SciLifeLab\, attendees will gain practical insights into how these policies are being implemented and how to align their work with both institutional and national requirements and monitoring initiatives. The session will offer valuable tools and strategies for ensuring compliance and promoting open science practices in a way that is both manageable and impactful. \n  \nPresenters: \nEmily Chenette\, Editor-in-Chief\, PLOS One \nAgata Morka\, Regional Director\, Publishing Development (Europe) at PLOS \nChristopher Erdmann\, Head of Open Science\, SciLifeLab \nCo-hosts: \nParul Tewatia\, Project coordinator (FAIR Metadata and Semantic Technologies)\, SciLifeLab \nSuné Joubert\, Project coordinator (Open Science Communities and Metrics)\, SciLifeLab \n
