SUMMARY:Bridging the Data-Compute Gap: Scaling Research with EOSC Data Commons
DESCRIPTION:EOSC Data Commons is more than just creating a repository; it is a vision for a “European Research Commons”\, a trusted ecosystem providing transparent access to high-quality\, interoperable research outputs and services. Coordinated by the EGI Foundation\, the project is building the bridges between distributed data sources and the high-performance computing resources needed to analyse them. \nThis session will break down the project’s mission to accelerate the research data lifecycle. We will explore how the Data Commons integrates with the EOSC EU Node and the EGI Federation to deliver innovative services for data discovery\, AI-based analytics\, and FAIRness assessment. \n  \nKey Takeaways: \n– The Architecture: How we are building a data and compute continuum across Europe. \n– Service Innovations: A first look at the AI-based metadata discovery services and the execution framework for analytical tools. \n– Stakeholder Impact: Why this matters for e-infra providers looking to federate and researchers aiming for reproducible\, cross-disciplinary science.

SUMMARY:Towards a Swiss EOSC Node: White Paper Presentation and Outlook on the EOSC Candidate Node Switzerland
DESCRIPTION:During the event\, the White Paper on a Swiss EOSC Node\, developed in the context of a temporary SERI Working Group together with key Swiss stakeholders in the field of Open Science and research data infrastructures will be presented. \nAs the international research landscape is undergoing rapid transformation towards federated\, interoperable\, and secure data-sharing ecosystems\, the White Paper aims to inform and enrich the national discussion on how Switzerland can position itself in relation to evolving international data-sharing initiatives\, and to support strategic preparation for future engagement—particularly in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation. \nAt the same time\, a Swiss proposal submitted under the second EOSC Federation wave call was positively evaluated earlier this year. Switzerland was therefore formally designated as an EOSC Candidate Node in May 2026. \nIn this context\, Prof. Dr Thomas Schulthess (ETH Zurich\, Director of the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre\, CSCS) will present the current status and outlook of the Swiss EOSC Candidate Node.

SUMMARY:Applying the EOSC Federation Handbook / Online session 1 (EOSC Academy Course 2)
DESCRIPTION:The EOSC Federation Handbook is a practical guide for facility managers\, resource providers\, and technical staff implementing the EOSC Federation. This course will explain how to apply the Federation Handbook with the help of real-world Node implementations. It will provide guidance on how to build Nodes and join the Federation. The course targets organizations preparing\, or are in the start-up phase to build Nodes and EOSC community members seeking deeper understanding of Federation processes. \n\n\n\n\nSpecific goals of the course: \n\nExplain what readers of the Handbook can expect to learn from the Handbook.\nClarify what can and cannot be found in the Handbook.\nPresent how the Handbook requirements were applied by specific Nodes.\nLearn how to Apply the building of a Node and join the Federation.\nConvey the idea of the Handbook as a community effort (led and carried out by the community)\, that it is in continuous evolution\, and that feedback is welcome and desired (stressing the channels to do that would be good)\n\nThe course targets the beneficiaries of the Gravity Preparatory and Interproject Calls who are preparing to build a Node as well as organisations and experts within the EOSC community who wish to deepen their understanding of the Federation and the processes supporting its development. \nTo ensure the course is as interactive as possible the strategy is to use a “flipped classroom” approach. The goal is to encourage the audience to engage with the EOSC Federation Handbook (aka Handbook) before the session\, so the online sessions can focus on high-level explanation and answering their specific questions. \nBy the end of this course\, the learner will:\n\n\nHave detailed knowledge of the Handbook:\nUnderstand the significance of the Handbook;\nBe able to reflect on how to apply it to their own needs;\nBe able to formulate and answer questions on the process of becoming a node.

SUMMARY:OPERAS 2026 & SCIROS Conference
DESCRIPTION:Research infrastructures (RIs) are often visualised as a collection of servers\, cables\, and code. However\, at its core\, a research infrastructure is a boundary object: a multifaceted entity that sits at the intersection of different social worlds. It is the common ground where researchers\, librarians\, publishers\, policymakers\, and engineers meet to cooperate despite their varying perspectives and needs. \nIn the OPERAS community\, we understand that an infrastructure for Open Science is not merely a technical utility but a living network and hub of technology\, people\, and know-how. These infrastructures function by linking action across multiple scales – from the specific needs of a local research lab to national strategies\, European frameworks (like EOSC)\, and global scholarly networks. Furthermore\, they integrate the interests of the entire scholarly ecosystem – including researchers\, publishers\, libraries\, media\, and non-profit organisations – to form a scholarly-driven\, inclusive\, and dedicated infrastructure. This conference explores the “connective tissue” of our work. Building on the values of inclusion\, scholarly-driven governance\, and community interaction\, we will discuss how RIs can address the structural and systemic challenges of the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). \nAs Research Infrastructures grow and mature into formal organisational entities – such as the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) or other sustainable legal frameworks – they increasingly serve as critical conduits between the diverse communities they unite and the audiences they serve. The specific organisational form an RI adopts creates unique opportunities to facilitate “knowledge travel” across various epistemic cultures. It is through these varied organisational models – linking the grassroots innovation of localised initiatives with the institutional power of international entities – that Research Infrastructures act as essential enablers of science for the benefit of both scholars and society at large. \nThis conference is jointly organised by the OPERAS Research Infrastructure and the SCIROS project\, both of which have been actively exploring the above issues within the Open Science landscape. OPERAS\, an infrastructure for scholarly communication in SSH\, has been growing for almost a decade and is planning to become a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) in the upcoming years. SCIROS\, launched in 2024\, brings a fresh and ambitious perspective\, building a vibrant and diverse network of researchers and research-performing organisations devoted to deepening the understanding of Open Science\, fostering new approaches to its theory\, and strengthening the OS practices and infrastructure ecosystem through collaboration. \nBy bringing together the OPERAS ecosystem and the SCIROS research network\, the conference creates a unique platform for the entire Open Science community to engage in reflection\, dialogue\, and knowledge exchange across theory\, empirical study\, and infrastructure development. In this way\, the conference theme\, “One network\, many possibilities. Strengthening the OPERAS community\,” comes to life\, showing how a connected yet diverse network can expand opportunities for collaboration\, innovation\, and sustainable growth in Open Science.

SUMMARY:Webinar Making meaningful data work together Exploring interoperability\, semantic artefacts\, and scalable solutions with ATRIUM and LUMEN
DESCRIPTION:What does it take for research data to travel across disciplines\, languages\, and borders? A webinar on 12 May\, 11 CEST\, will explore how interoperability and semantic artefacts\, such as shared vocabularies\, ontologies\, and metadata schemas\, can transform the way research data is shared\, reused\, and scaled across Arts\, Social Sciences\, and Humanities. \nThe session will unpack why interoperability matters and clarify the role and value of semantic artefacts. Drawing on the FAIR principles\, the speakers will examine key challenges in data integration and will present concrete solutions to address them. They will also emphasise the growing need to industrialise the creation and management of semantic artefacts to make research infrastructures more efficient\, sustainable\, and interoperable at scale. \nThis online session\, organised jointly by ATRIUM and LUMEN EU-funded projects\, is aimed at project communities and researchers working with semantic artefacts: including ontologies\, controlled vocabularies\, and metadata schemas. \nSpeakers: \n\nMassimiliano Carloni (OEAW / ATRIUM)\nJulien Homo (Foxcub / ATRIUM & LUMEN)\nFlorian Lemoine (e-Science Data Factory / LUMEN)\n\nYou can register here. \nAbout ATRIUM: ATRIUM aims to exploit and strengthen complementarities between leading European infrastructures – DARIAH\, ARIADNE\, CLARIN\, and OPERAS – in order to provide vastly improved access to state-of-the-art services available to researchers across countries\, languages\, domains and media. \nAbout LUMEN:The LUMEN project aims to advance cross-domain collaboration and discovery processes in four academic fields: Mathematics (Maths)\, Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH)\, Earth System (ES) and Molecular Dynamics (MD). Through interdisciplinary solutions spanning all four domains\, LUMEN sets out to significantly improve discovery by innovation\, simplifying initial research phases and facilitating access to advanced AI-powered tools for researchers.
